Rishikesh - India's Haight-Ashbury

... Golden Temple, the holiest place of the Sikh religion. We miss you all, hope everyone is healthy and doing well. Namaste! - Sarah and Matt PS. Sarah was assaulted by yet another rhesus monkey during our visit to Rishikesh. We were crossing one of those pedestrian only bridges and one snuck up from beneath it and actually screamed/growled in her face, for no apparent reason. To the amusement of surrounding Indians, Sarah screamed and ran to the end of the bridge. Why are they so scary?

Brown Rice

So, one of the many cleanses/purifications recommended by my yoga school is the Brown Rice Diet. Now, I have heard of this back in the real world and have always been somewhat interested in trying it. I figured eating only brown rice might give my poor digestive system a break and perhaps enable it to better handle foods in the future. However, who can ever think of a time when they can only eat brwon rice for ten days? There was never a 10 day period in my day to day NYC ...

Meditation Boot Camp

... down a valley and across a stream before we arrived at our site. Only half an hour from town but it seemed like a world away with its peaceful and quiet surroundings. Fruit trees, bouganvillea plants, palm trees and others that we didn't recognize provided a natural haven for the many birds and monkeys in the area. The army base is also close by and during some of the meditation sessions we could hear the sounds of ...

Rishikesh and Rishikesh Yog Peeth

... scene. I can not say enough good things about Rishikesh Yog Peeth. The food is good, the people are great and everything flows together nicely. The Yoga classes are really hard for a 46 year old pudgy guy. The encouraging thing for me is the young kids have a hard time too. I predict I will drop about 25 pounds and walk out of hear in good physical condition. We have yoga class twice a day where we perform the physical postures. Each session is for 1.5 hours. In-between ...

Going with the flow in Rishikesh

... But foolishly this was only the beginning. As we pulled in further downstream, we realised that this is the spot where rafters can really give their heart a fright as we saw another group mounting a 30 foot tall rock and then jumping into the water below. Now I´m not sure whether it was the adrenalin still in my system after the bodysurfing, but I actually went along with this madness! But however high up it looked from below, once we climbed up to the rock and I looked down ...

... games on his phone. Theres no chance of you going hungry on Indian trains, the many food sellers make sure of that, walkiung up and down the train shouting their own mantra of food, some are quite interesting to decipher. "Tarraa marrta zoooop" one says, going up at the the end, this is tomato soup man. My particular favourite was one with a rather high pitched voice shouting "chiiiiiiiips, crisppppies", I enjoyed that. The train hurtled across India, which ...

Not my ideal family stay

... a little more to stay here, maybe $5/ night if the family was actually nice and welcoming. She gave me a lecture later in the day about how money makes the world go 'round and how I need it to do things I want to do. I told her I didn't like talking about it, and that I was planning on paying her so stop worrying about it. I think I should also tell her that another way of doing good business besides getting as much money as possible from her few guests is to be kind ...

The drive from Delhi to Dehradun

... grind as visible from the bus window: street vending; sorting through trash; hanging out in the metal shop, tire shop, or ministore; welding; and peddling heavy supplies around that normally would be carried by a truck on a bike; bathing. Once we got out of the city, the scenery changed a little bit to include lots of huge dung piles, sugarcane presses, piles of freshly made bricks, smokestacks (for making bricks or processing ...
