... directed us back along the I40 east for eight miles then we took an exit crossed over the I40 and went back the way we came on the west carriageway for eight miles. The satnav voice is a nice young lady, Pauline shouted at the device ‘it’s obvious that she’s not paying for the petrol, what a joke get yourself sorted dear’.

Time for a dip in the pool to chill I think for ...

But we will never be here again......

... was Holbrook, AZ, another small town with a pretty decent Route 66 history. Old motels lined the streets, including one that many associate with route 66, the Wigwam Motel. It's a motor court of concrete teepees. None were open and the office wasn't open either. You can apparently still stay in them but they don't open 'til 4 pm. We took our pictures, had our laughs, and drove on through town.

... the rain continued. We reached a town called Grants, not far from Gallup and the road was flooded, with a raging torrent pouring out from the side, accompanied by mud and silt. So, a turn around and back to the freeway with the dark skies behind us getting worse and worse. In amongst all this, we crossed the continental divide in New Mexico.

Fortunately for us, we were bypassed by the worst of it and we got to Gallup for the night, rain free.

... the town was bypassed but in 1988 it was reopened. The office was closed but we walked around the tepees. Parked out front of each of them was an old car, looked like pretty basic accommodation but like such a lot of these towns the folks will try any gimmick to stay alive and keep the tourist dollar coming in. ... filmed here as well. Upstairs on the landing there is photo display of actors from the good old days, mostly westerns but most of them are autographed. We stay for dinner, its ok nothing to get excited about but it was apparently a must do in Gallup. The most exciting thing is that its dark when we come out and so we get to see the neon lights of Gallup.- first time we've been out at night since leaving Chicago!
