... rushed us inside the barn out of the wind and dust and gave us these huge donkey jackets. She told us it was the windiest day she'd ever had on the ranch and I half expected her to cancel there and then but she didn't. My horse was called Yahtzee. ... a good photo opportunity. This is where the water flow across the continent divides flowing west into the Pacific and east and south east to the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico respectively. There are a few Indian trading stores here which are very reasonably priced compared to the traders in Santa Fe.

The next stop was our hotel in Gallup. As we entered the city I set the satnav for the hotel ...

But we will never be here again......

... in Holbrook which are listed in the Route 66 books and talked about on the websites. They are "Romo's" and "Joe and Aggie's". We chose "Joe and Aggie's" as they had a small parking lot and we were able to thread our rig in it. We went inside and the place was full of threadbare booths, a broken juke box, and a few regulars eating in the back. You look up dive in the dictionary...and it had a pic of the interior of this place. Then ...

... the rain continued. We reached a town called Grants, not far from Gallup and the road was flooded, with a raging torrent pouring out from the side, accompanied by mud and silt. So, a turn around and back to the freeway with the dark skies behind us getting worse and worse. In amongst all this, we crossed the continental divide in New Mexico.

Fortunately for us, we were bypassed by the worst of it and we got to Gallup for the night, rain free.

In 1942 Samuel Hopkins Adams wrote a book titled The Harvey Girls and in 1946 MGM released a musical film starring Angela Landsbury and Judy Garland. If you've stopped reading, I don't blame you but I tend to get a bit absorbed in some of this history. Leaving the park we now head to Holbrook.... Not much to see here, another sad example of what once was. There is however the Wigwam Motel. It did close ...
