Bisons and Bears and Broncs - Part 3

A travel blog entry by vacationbears

I had to write the tale of this day's adventures in 3 parts, which sort of gives you an idea of how exhausted we all were by day's end (well, maybe not Gerrit - he's 15 and has the luxury of sleeping through all the long car rides :-)

It was 7:45 when we arrived back in Cody, so Gerrit was still up for taking in the Cody Nite Rodeo, which …

(cont) Day 4 of Our Wild West Vacation

It didn't take long for us to see what I'd come to see at Yellowstone - wildlife! We hadn't been driving all that long in the park before we saw our first - a buffalo! He (or she) was lying comfortably maybe three feet from the side of the road, munching contendedly and totally unfazed by the cars …

Day 4 of Our Wild West Vacation

Despite my thrill at seeing Mount Rushmore, I think I looked forward even more to today's trip to America's oldest and most famous National Park - Yellowstone! Having been an animal lover since I was a toddler, seeing animals in the wild has always been a special passion of mine, although one I haven't had …

Day 3 of Our Wild West Adventure

The hardest part of a road trip like this is trying to decide what to see, especially if it makes the driving day longer. We knew our drive from Rapid City, South Dakota to Cody, Wyoming would take all day, so we debated over whether we should see Deadwood, and later Devil's Tower, along the way. Deadwood …

Cody...in Wyoming. The original west. Unfortunately it's the shoulder season, and these guys are all or nothing. So a lot of stuff was shut down. We did get to see the museum which is 5 museums in one, covering all things cowboy and western and the famous buffalo bill who founded the town of cody. We most enjoyed the rapture show which featured 3 …

    The Cody in Cody Wyoming

The hotel itself is lovely, and the view looking away from it at the mountains is lovely. There's an old western village across the street, as well as the Cody Rodeo (a must see - hey, it's the rodeo capital of the world!). The accomodations were comfortable and well-appointed, though I found the walls a little thin, since I could hear dogs fighting a few rooms down (apparently dogs are allowed), or children talking, etc. But otherwise it was fairly quiet, and convenient for doing things in Cody, or venturing into Yellowstone. If I had one recommendation for them (this is really minor, but ...) the breakfast that's provided offers only eggs cooked with onions and green peppers - and no other eggs (i.e. plain). Being the rare individual who hates both onions and green peppers, I had to do without eggs as there wasn't another option. Probably a popular choice for most people but not for me.
