      An early start this morning and as usual we got an earlier train , which was boarding in 5 mins, so we arrived in Dover before we had left France.
      The worst thing that struck us was the awful state of the English roads. The concrete M20 is diabolical. What on earth foreign visitors must think - its an awful welcome to the country.
      The Spanish road system is superb and the French roads were all open in snow and ice.

We walked through The Lanes which are packed with pubs, restaurants and shops and down the main shopping street, and skirted the Royal Pavilion, surely the most self-indulgently decadent building we'd ever seen! It was built by Prince George, later King George IV, and is covered with flamboyant Indian-style domes ...
