Historical Traveler Reviews of The Block Hotel Big Bear Big Bear Lake
Overpriced and not for kids or those who dislike vulgarity
from lksmugsy
Went there with my husband and two young children. Right away, I could tell that this was not a place for kids or even adults with any taste. Blaring in the lobby and parking lot is rap music with extremely vulgar and profane lyrics. You cannot get away from it.
As for the room, at first, we really liked the large screen TV and playstation. However, when we tried to play DVDs, you had to use the playstation to manuever the various menus, which is almost impossible.
The kicker is that we ordered 2 rollaways over a week in advance and were told that it would be "no problem". I asked about them again when I checked in and was told they would be in our room before 9 p.m. Returning at 8:45 p.m., they still weren't there, so I called the front desk. I was told that they were out of rollaways. I eventually talked to the manager who finally "found" some more rollaways. They weren't brought to our room til 10 pm., one hour after my kids' bedtime. When I asked for some reduction in the room rate ($239 for a standard room with one king bed!), I was told they would do nothing for me.
Loved it.

The Block at Big Bear is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed. The room was nice, comfy and had all the accomidations we needed and then some. The staff was wonderful, as well. Without a doubt, I will be booking a room at the Block again soon!
Unbelievable!

The room was great, no doubt - but you can see that on the website. The Block delivered everything it promised on the site, but the hotel offers much more in person. As you pull up to the hotel, you know right away it is not like any other hotel. How many hotels have people hanging out in the lobby shooting pool and watching snowboarding videos on a huge flat screen, with rap music playing in the courtyard?
What most impressed me about this place is the friendliness of the staff and the total experience they helped develop for our trip.
Our kids absolutely loved the place. The front desk folks (who made the effort of learning our kids' names) were great when it came to my kids checking out games and movies (for free!). The staff also listened to our kids share highlights from our time snowboarding. We stayed for 5 days and unlike most other vacations, our kids never got tired of being in the hotel room. They loved hearing the music every time we left the room - but we could not hear it in the room unless we stood right be the door and they cut the music off before we went to sleep.
The Block also has some sort of connection with the Log Cabin Restaurant down the road. Being Block guests got us a 20% discount on all our meals and our kids ate for free at breakfast!
We might have been able to save a little money on our room (not much) by staying at a cheaper place - but with no snow fall (only man-made) at Bear Mountain, staying at the Block became the highlight of a great trip. With all the extras you get with the Block, the value is unbelievable! We will be back.
Not what I expected

The colors in the room were nice, but when we walked in the room we noticed the bed was slanted, there was water damage on the walls and the phone in the room didn't work. The TV is nice, but it's too big for the small room (standard king). The best part of the room was the love sac!
It just wasn't want we had expected it to be at all. But I have to admit the staff was great to us and that made it a better experience.
This place rocks!

I only planned to got to Big Bear for a day to go mountain biking, but when I saw The Block and all the hot girls hanging out there, I ended up staying for 3 days. They really do it well at The Block, cool people work and hang out there, the rooms were big and stylish, not like a motel room just to sleep in, but a cool place to hang out in with friends (or some of the ladies I saw there). No attitudes and lot's of stuff to do, I'll definetly be back, cant wait for snow!

The rooms were nice, but the music was so loud. Sometimes a guy likes to sleep too!
We loved the Block

The beds were great with cozy comforters and huge pillows. The 50" widescreen TV at the foot of the bed made me feel like I was in movie. My wife loved the hairdyer and make-up mirror in the room. The outdoor music and fire-fountain made for great laid-back ambiance. If you want a comfortable room with hi tech entertainment rather than just another motel room check out the Block.
This place is better than the Tahoe one!

I just got back from my trip down south to the the new block, this place is great. I've been to the tahoe one and big bear has got it beat. I thought the tahoe block was great but big bear takes it up a notch. The rooms are nice and big and the sponsored rooms are the best. The staff is professional and has everything together and organized. This is an establishment I will repeat my business with and would recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to make the most of their vacation.

"The Block Hotel at Big Bear was a BIG surprise! I have stayed in many hotels (including 4 star hotels in New York) but nothing prepared me for my stay at The Block. What was so special? How about six pillows on a bed so comfortable I thought I was at home. And a plush white comforter too! I sunk into the bed and enjoyed the complimentary popcorn provided the hotel as I watched a video on the 56 inch T.V. screen in my room. The staff was professional and friendly and provided for my every need. Thank you!"

I recently traveled to Big Bear and stayed at the Block Hotel. I found that this newly remodeled hotel offered great service for a great price. The hotel manager was especially helpful with recomending activities to do in the town. The room was comfortable and pleasing to stay in. I would truly reccomend this hotel to anyone going to Big Bear. It is a diamond in the ruff!
