Before Rte 550 was put through this place was about as remote as you could get get. Without a drivable road the only viable way to Silverton was through Durango by train...the same train we rode. I pulled over and put it back in 4 wheel drive and we preceded down the mountain. SNOW IN AUGUST! From the pictures you can't tell that 4wd is needed but I guarantee you would not get from 7000 feet to 11,000 feet on this road without it. It was great fun!
