Day 78: California ... nearly home!

Okay, we have officially gone soft. We passed maybe 20 State Park campgrounds between Crescent City and Fort Bragg, and not once did we feel compelled to drive off the road and enquire about a tent site. We have San Diego in our sights, and even if we become completely depleted of funds we feel like we could walk home and be happy, as long as we keep up with the hot showers, TV, and complimentary breakfasts offered by the hotel/motel option. The drive south from the OR/CA border was again shr...

Bad start to the day

Sometimes you just slow yourself down and it's a good thing. I had been very efficient in getting all my gear packed on the bike and was looking forward to the redwood highway when a couple started chatting in the Hiouchi Motel parking lot about this and that.
When we wrapped things up and I headed out onto rte 199 south I did not get more than 4 miles or so when I saw a woman out on the road waving her hands at the junction with 101's feeder road. An accident had just occurred and betwee...

Why leave when it's perfect?

Within minutes of arriving at the Beachcomber, I asked myself why not stay over another day and rest up my hands from the exciting switchback excursion. I have to say that despite exercises specifically to keep them in good condition, my hands remain the longsuffering victims of really long or arduous roads. So I did stay over and spent the day walking all over town, sitting on the beach and poring over maps.
Lovely time. Lovely sunny day in the high 60s. There are charming shops and a sup...

Comfortable beach motel

from spygirl
My dog and I stayed here in early 04/05. It was affordable, clean, and comfortable, and practically right on the beach at the north end of Fort Bragg (a short drive from downtown). Although I'd expressed concern about the noise of the traffic on the nearby highway, the desk clerk said that it virtually stopped at 8 p.m. -- and it did. I slept well.

There was a great paved path just outside our room, so convenient for an evening walk, and we also hiked down the cliff to the beach; the next day we went to the beach by Pudding Creek, a very short distance away.

The only criticism I have are the thin walls between units -- I could hear my neighbors talking and watching television until they went to sleep, which was, luckily, fairly early.

I'd probably stay here again. I really do appreciate dog-friendly motels (they even provided a dog towel for us to use).

Don't waste your money - go somewhere else

Thought we were going for a nice family vacation but it was the weekend of disapointments. They lost our reservation for one of the nights, our fireplace didn't work and they only gave a partial credit, less than half of what I paid for the upgrade, the shower was marked wrong and we scalded ourselves, the beach was a hike down a cliff, and management didn't care that we were leaving 2 days early. It's over priced, run down, and they don't care.

Not worth the $; wish we'd only reserved 1 night instead of 2

from WontoOne
We have travelled through much of Mexico with our son and decided it was time to see local sites. We made a 2 night reservation for the hotel based on photos and info from the Internet. What a disappointment when we finally arrived at the hotel. The hotel was not worth the high price that we paid. The continental breakfast was skimpy! The blankets had large holes and stains. No air conditioning meant you had to leave the sliding glass door open and risk being robbed or leave the bathroom window open and listen to the traffic from highway 1 and other guests walking along the wooden corridor. We didn't sleep for 2 nights!! We did have a nice view of the ocean; however, you had to walk/slide down a dirt hill to reach it. We didn't care for Fort Bragg and liked the hotel even less. We will never stay at the Beachcomber again! The best part of our trip was when we made a wrong turn on the drive home and discovered the cute town of Calistoga. For our next vacation, I think we'll return to Mexico where "beachfront" hotel has a totally different meaning and you actually get what you pay for.

Average place to stay; depressing town; loved Skunk Train!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Certainly not the best place I've stayed before. We had a two-night reservation but ended up cancelling our second night and going home the next day. Dated rooms. The motel is located on the ocean but set back and couldn't see the ocean too well from our lower level room. The only two places we found to eat dinner in Fort Bragg during the week were Denny's and Perko's -- we chose Perko's and it was decent. But we didn't want to eat at a coffee shop the next night also so another reason to only stay one night. And for some really strange reason, the sheets and towels smelled like they were washed in/near a coffee shop! They weren't fresh and clean smelling. Smelled of Perko's! The town looks like it's really feeling a bad economy, too, which was actually sad. Riding the Skunk Train and driving through the Drive-Thru tree in Leggett made the whole trip worthwhile!

Very nice beach motel.....gorgious views, walking path etc.

from sandlovers
Beach motels and hotels usually scare me....sight unseen but, not this one. What a delight! We had the 2 room, 3 Queen suite with jack and jill bathroom, fireplace, balcony and beautiful views. There are walking/cycling paths and they take pets and even give you a "pet towel"! We're fairly picky but we would have no problem staying here again!

The 'Comber is a Great Place!

If you want to be able to walk to a secluded beach in 5 minutes, hang out with your dog, meet nice people, this is the place for you. Chicoans often go to Fort Bragg to get away from the Sacramento Valley heat, and the Beachcomber Motel is a great place to do it. You're close to Fort Bragg, Mac Kerricher State Park, Jenny's Giant Burger, Glass Beach, the Brew Pub, Eggheads, what more could you want? The motel has been owned by the same family for over 30 years, the rooms are clean, and the staff is friendly.

This ain't the Ritz, but if you want a hoity-toity atmosphere, stay in the village of Mendocino. The Beachcomber Motel will treat you like family and you'll go back again and again!

Great Ocean front location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great beach front location and the clean rooms are fairly priced at the south end of the property. The breakfast of cereal, sweets, juice, and coffee is satisfactory and nice to take back to the room. The old lumber haul road is just out side and makes a great walk/bike trail up the coast. The beach below is fun to walk and explore and is priceless.

Bring a kite to fly on the beach. Sunsets are tops viewed outside or inside the room. Relax and stay a few days and get into the local seen.

Save your $$

from gemicka
A tired and rather expensive hotel, considering the area. Although it has some fresh upgrades, the facility is dated. We had a two day reservation that we terminated after one night. Save your $$ and stay at one of the many nice B&Bs...

Hotel on the Ocean

from Buffy66
Just had a first visit to Ft. Bragg. Not too impressed. The town seems to be struggling. This hotel was recommended by a friend. It was on the beach and the rooms overlooked the ocean. It was a little noisy at night when we could hear the neighbors tv at 2:00 a.m. But if in that area again, would stay there.

Great Place

This is a great place to stay. Just a bit north of FT. Bragg. Excellent views of the ocean from most of the rooms. The staff is friendly and efficient. Has a variety of rooms that are clean and well maintained.
