The Rasmus Dahlbom Memorial Tour

Hun gik saa lidt over stregen da hun kaldte os for racister fordi at vi ...

Stop Over

... and lied down. I had to sit back up because the bus was filling up but it was to let 2 girls sit at the back so I did not mind too much. I apologised for being rough and stinking of booze and fell back asleep. I did not make many observations on the way as I was too tired unfortunately.

We stopped at the services and I needed the toilet for a chance. I took a little longer than I ...

PE - So good we went to the cinema, twice!

Not the most brilliant compulsory Bazbus stop ever, we arrived at 11pm and were taxied down the road away from the hostel to 'Faith Alley' our own self-catered cottage. PE at night is about as pleasing on the eye as Chernobyl. It's badly lit, deserted but for a few suspicious looking characters and seems simply dangerous. It's also the windiest place on earth. The next morning we went to Hobes Beach which is nice, only spoilt by the ...

The Garden Route

... on Mondays. The next morning we were back at the airport and ready to start our South African adventure. We flew into Port Elizabeth on the southern coast and rented a Nissan X-trail to take us down the Garden Route. We spent two nights in the Chapman Hotel situated on a hill only one block from the beach offering amazing views of the Indian Ocean. It was wintertime so we were not able to use the small infinity pool or lay on the beach, but ...

Garden Route Part 2

... in reverse around the park and the park warden was gob smacked as we left. After we got the exhaust fixed, Wayne took us to Mission Vale, a local township that he volunteers for. This was a facinating experience as we got to see some of the "real" parts of South Africa. This was a smallish township of around 100,000 with an AIDS affected number of around 60%. The Mission was set up by a nun (Sister Ethel) a while ago and is about self ...

2 weeks crammed into 1 entry!

... mesmerized by it and then to top it off the sang SA's moving national anthem, I have to admit that there weren't many dry eyes left in the place afterwords! So that's about it. Got back safe and sound, although I was stopped by the police 3 times on the drive back to PE!! It was a great few days and I could go on for longer, but my fingers are beginning to seize up. Hope everyone is well, thanks for e-mails - keep them coming. James

... saw when he was three days old, has grown into the most delightful little chap with a penchant for singing. He treated us to a technically superb rendition of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, the South African national anthem, sung at the top of his voice, accompanying himself on 'drums' (ie his toybox) and naked from the waist down. And we don't even know the lyrics beyond the first verse... On Monday evening we headed over to Mike and Debbie's home for a braai. We last ...

I would also like to add something else from the site which I feel pretty much sums up beautiful PSJ: "You can never tire of the journey through the terraced Transkei hills towards the town of Port St Johns where the Umzimvubu ...

Impromtu Township Tour

... at me cheerfully through the metal fence. Decrepid and filthy shantytowns dripping in desparation. Shared outhouses and laundry lines strung up through the meager dirt yards. Even though the shacks were made out of nothing but scraps they had fences around them securing them from what? Was it to keep people in or out? It reminded me of that movie Rabbit Proof Fence. We passed one "house" that stood out to me with its abundance of colorful flowers and plants which almost ...
