Day 6 St Lucia to Drakensberg

Monday 8 September we departed 7.30am and headed towards the Drakensberg Mountains via the East Coast, travelling through Durban, the second largest city in South Africa with three million people. It was noted that half a million Zulus still live traditionally. As we were driving through Durban our guide said 'we will turn left here at the robots' – what robots we asked?? ...

Hiking the mountains

Today we had the chance to hike in the Drakenberg. Dale went for a hike with 2 others in the nearby Natal Park along the river gorge to a beautiful set of cascades and waterfall. They climbed up on a large rock called Lookout Rock to admire the 360 degree views. It was a difficult decision to leave such a magnificent spot. David went on the all day tour to the Amphitheatre which involved a 2 hour drive to ...

Luckily we were allowed to pass by driving around it through the bush although the police officer asked that we all get off and walk ...

John was sitting about two feet from the door but the monkey was so quick. Monkeys live around the camp and take any opportunity to steal food via any open door - chalet or car! Drove the Dakaneni Loop, good bush habitat for black rhino and elephant. However ...

Today we were rudely awoken by a phone call at 6am, but thankfully our friends were calling from their van looking at a pride of lion. We got up and dashed out the door to go pick up another girl who decided not to do the early morning drive. Our poor little Kia picanto became a rally car on the bumpy dirt road as Chris flew to meet our lion spotters. A trip that took the others an hour took us about 15 minutes. Thankfully the lions were still ...
