Hiking the mountains

A travel blog entry by daveanddale on Apr 09, 2014

Today we had the chance to hike in the Drakenberg. Dale went for a hike with 2 others in the nearby Natal Park along the river gorge to a beautiful set of cascades and waterfall. They climbed up on a large rock called Lookout Rock to admire the 360 degree views. It was a difficult decision to leave such a magnificent spot. David went on the all day tour to the Amphitheatre which involved a 2 hour drive to ...

... was a supermarket stop at the town of Cocolan as we followed the border towards the Golden Gate Highlands NP. We stopped for lunch at the lookout in the park which had stunning views of the surrounding ranges which had strata layers of bright red stone. After lunch we came across a semi- trailer that had jack-knifed across the road. Drove the Dakaneni Loop, good bush habitat for black rhino and elephant. However ...

After the initial open grassland where we saw a few Wildebeest and a lone Giraffe, the drive was largely through dense thicket. Given the continuing rain most of the animals and birds proved elusive. Only a couple of bird species were added to the list :- Southern Black Tit and Violet-backed Starling. Willow Warblers singing back at the chalet brought thoughts of England in May. The scenery ...

... to sleep. Finally we have seen lions and ticked off the last of the big 5. Later on in the day we came across some lions mating. It was quite the spectacle. She lays down and he jumps on board, then he growls a bit and gets off. She walks away a little and he plonks down for a rest. They walk further on and repeat, again and again. We also came upon some elephant who stopped traffic, no one was willing to drive by them as they were pretty amped ...
