Travel Blogs from Detroit
I worked across the street at the Greektown Casino which is currently building their own hotel. The view from my room was nice - the GM building was straight ahead. Wish I could say the room itself was nice, it was large, but verrrrrry outdated. I didn't walk around like I do when I visit other downtowns. Downtown Detroit just didn't seem all that appealing to me.
As you can see by the picture, my son in law if plying me with Michigan products to impress me with how great Michigan is. This Brightmoor neighbourhood can be visited virtually in Google street view, but it doesn't do the impact justice...the best way to describe this is being caught in the middle of a zombie apocolyspe movie. This is a typical suburban hood with modest houses and then all of a sudden... crack looking houses, boarded up houses, burned down houses - or in an interesting twist "green" spaces ...

Jeff gave us some tips on areas to avoid and where the gangland was, very helpful as we seemed to avoid all trouble. Historical Traveler Reviews The Atheneum Detroit
I was part of the organizing committee for a 500 person dinner at this hotel on October 30, 2004. I must say that as far as that portion of this review is concerned that the entire hotel and staff did a super job.
Nice Room but Breakfast Wasn't Ready
I happened to be in town the night the Pistons won the Championship in June. So needless to say, I definitley had fun in Greektown.
The hotel lobby was quite nice and impressive but figuring out where the elevator buttons were was a little tricky at first. The room was a large suite with a sitting room on one level and a bedroom about 5 steps down on a second level. The bathroom was spacious and all marble. But even with all the lights on, I still found the room a little dark. My only real complaint was that the reataurant didn't open on time so I had to rush my breakfast before leaving for my business meeting.
I would stay there again mainly for it's location, but overall it was a very nice hotel.
I stayed at this hotel 2 nights as a get-away for the weekend. I booked the junior-suite and was pleasantly surprised. The two-room suite was very nice and is roomy. The halls tend to get a little loud with partying guests so stay as far from the elevator as possible. I don't care for Fishbones Restaurant, but Sweet Georgia Brown was excellent. The parking is expensive and other than eating and gambling there isn't much to do though unless a festival is in town. I would recommend this hotel to others.
Size Does NOT Matter
Dear God - This was the worst hotel I have ever had to stay in ... Yes, the rooms are big, but as the saying goes, it's not about the size, it's what you do with it. From the moment you walk into the lobby, to the time you happily get to leave the hotel, you are overcome by the stench of stale smoke. Go ahead and ask for a non-smoking room, but don't be disappointed when you open the door to the smell of an old cigarette. (It's probably from the one you'll find in your nightstand.) And I hope you're not tired, because if the stains on the bedspread don't keep you awake at night, the sound of your neighbors in the next room will certainly do the trick. Run, my friend. Run as far as you can from this place.
I just love the hotel
I love the beautiful hotel and the adjoining resturant (fishbone) the room are spacious and comfort. local in the area, casino across the street, a nice jazz lounge that great soul food and you'll have to check out sweet georgia brown a beautiful restraurant with a wonderful piano player the food is a little pricey. I love my still so much in mar 2003 I staying this weekend
Totally love the hotel and Greektown!!!
our television productions take us to detroit often and we love to stay at Ted and Maria Gatzaros's atheneum hotel. the food is great the rooms are large, lovely, clean, comfortable. close to all there is to see or do in detroit. fishbones for cajun food, pegasus for greek food and all the shopping you can handle.. not to mention the very close proximity to the greektown casino!! we love it Tom Greene, Chris Pratt, and the whole michigan business weekly crew.. take care and god bless
It was bad
the service was terrible. I had to wait for 1 hour for room service and when i got it the food was cold. Bathroom was dirty and unkept.
All the workers seem unhappy.
All the workers seem unhappy when I was there. Some of apparently were fired recently.
I thought it was great!
I read the previous review shortly after my Company booked a major event for our clients at the Atheneum Suite Hotel and so I went being a bit nervous, but ended up being very pleasantly surprised. I thought it was a great place! The accommodations were just beautiful and the staff were great folks. I thought the staff were really into their jobs from the front desk right down to the valet parking car hops. Even the guys cooking live at the pasta and stir fry bar for our reception were super - joking with us and the clients about the weather, Detroit sports, and the nearby casino. If I ever need to stay downtown in Detroit again, I would definitely stay here.
Don't Waste Your Money or Time
I believe the Atheneum Suite Hotel is one of the WORST Hotels I have ever had the displeasure of being a guest in. They have to be one of the most unorganized hotels and there staff is one of the most inept. DO NOT GO THERE
