Valentines Day and for the third year running I found a lovely Int**net card from my favourite mate in Bristol - thank you! Made my day! It was Louisa's Birthday and we all met at Louisa's shack, high up Mount M**u Mountain. The plan for all 20 of us hadn't been thought through and aft** a few hours we w**e all hungry and people started to fall out. I went outside to stay out of it all - big mistake! When I decided to come back inside all the beds - and any remaining pillows, cushions, roll m...
Arusha, Tanzania emma_inafricaAll of our travellers - AND all of their luggage - arrived in Arusha together and on schedule. Upon arrival at the Arusha Hotel around 10 pm last nite, we were greeted with welcoming smiles, cool towelettes and a refreshing glass of juice. This morning after a good sleep and breakfast we met our safari guides and had last minute schedule updates. Then of was time for a quick and delicious lunch before setting off on our first safari...
Tanzania, Tanzania mcewenmCape Buffalo, baboons, hippos, giraffe - within 6 feet of our jeep! - zebra, dikdik, colobus monkeys, warthogs, water buck, bush buck, and a blue monkey... All within 1 park and 3 hours. 2 flat tires barely slowed us down and 42 alumni returned to the hotel suitably excited and awed with their 1st day. Access will be sketchy as we head into the Serengeti tomorrow but will do my best to update our experiences.
Tanzania, Tanzania mcewenmMorning dawned bright and sunny. Early breakfast and then tour of city. Stopped at Cultural Centre where arts and crafts could be admired and souvenirs purchased. Lots of intricate ebony and rosewood carvings - impossibly intertwined figures of the nation's best known wildlife species. And the tanzanite! Oh my! After lunch we head to our lodge on Lake Manyara in the Serengeti. Until my next post Kwaheri! (good bye)
Tanzania, Tanzania mcewenmDecember 8th?? I know I shouldn't post this, but I'm going to. Moo-ha-ha!! (that's my evil laugh) I'm having a "moment." Sometimes I really, really hate Europeans. In these moments, rare as they are, perhaps once every five or so years lasting about one hour, I feel enraged. Really. I think it's because in general I accept my status as an American and therefore the "whipping boy" of the world. I accept that our country is powerful and makes some very ****** decisions - decisions that cause th...

... many of which have had their own children Upendo’s age. Her father immediately agreed and was overjoyed to have the burden of Upendo’s school fees lifted off his shoulders. It was a completely different cultural experience because the mother had absolutely no say in the matter. She actually said nothing the entire time other than "thank you". We then walked out of the boma (little hut that they live in) to see Upendo’s father handing us a goat. This goat was the most ...
Arusha, Tanzania taliasegal... meat stew, banana, and cucumber, we were just relaxing before starting the rest of the lessons for the day. So that day, the only day that I wore my hair down (since I look like Mufassa because I have no hair straightener, obviously, I always wear it back, except this day), this crazy lady teacher decides she wants to braid my hair. She creeps over to me, and since some Tanzanians don't use utensils when they eat, her hands are COVERED in meat ...
Arusha, Tanzania emilybriglia... barely answer, or she just screams to herself.

So, like I said, around 9PM last night began me wishing I could throw myself out the window and get eaten by a lion or have some African man steal me and sell me into slavery or have to do anything horrible other than listen to Mama Anna's voice. Since my Swahili is limited, I normally don't understand anything she's screaming about. But last night, I was hearing "Ni na choka" literally every 7 words. "Ni na choka" means I am ...
Arusha, Tanzania emilybriglia... It turned out he had cut his hand and wanted us to check with Dr. Mhando. The day before he showed us a gash on his head he got from walking into an open window. This guy needs to be more careful. Je-sus (which I pronounce Hey-zeus like Spanish ppl). After breakfast, we chilled out a bit. Me and Ben rocked a workout with the resistant bands I brought. Circuit training in Africa son!!!! We then all headed into town to get some more Sim cards and get some ...
Arusha, Tanzania maniaintanzania... the main objectives of the organization; primarily they provide home-based care to HIV+ individuals, help orphans who lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, and provide other services like paralegal assistance or financial assistance. I wanted to see if there was any way I could work with the orphans, but it's looking kind of difficult with the way our schedule is set up. Once I told her that I've been doing health education for the past couple of years, she asked if I'd be willing to ...
