Making the most of the sunshine

      Hi everyone!

Since our last entry we've been making the very best of some lovely sunny weather.

Yesterday, Dad, Nico, the girls and I went to Clumber Park which is run by the National Trust and is just a few miles down the A1. We hired bikes for the afternoon and enjoyed the outdoors together. The park is a huge favourite of mine with a visitor centre, shop and cafe plus a beautiful chapel, follies, fords, and it's very own mini village. The main ...

      Yorkminster Day Trip

York is only about three hours from where we are living and Chris had wanted to show me Yorkminster for quite some time. My birthday was the perfect excuse for a day trip up to this medieval city.

We arrived in the city late morning and went straight up to Yorkminster Cathedral. Before we went into Yorkminster though, Chris wanted to show me a beautiful war memorial that stands right outside of the Cathedral. He said it was one of his favorite ...

Alcohol was pricey, generally around $50 for a bottle of wine and then there was the gym which we both attended daily both of which almost certainly helped us to reach our goal of zero weight gain and increased fitness over the course of the trip. The game of Bridge was something we had not anticipated but which ended up taking up quite a lot of our time on the ship. Some teachers were better than others and eventually we managed to play ...

      ... as well.

Dinner tonight was wine, cheese and crackers in front of the telly, (owing to the heaviness of our lunch) watching Strictly Come Dancing - the show that Dancing With the Stars has spun off from. It was weird - the set is exactly the same, the theme music is the same, Bruno and Len are judges but there is definitely a different feel. I think its less flashy and they definitely wear more clothes; Paul thinks they stick to the actual dances ...

      Monks "go commando"!

Today we went to see Fountains Abbey - someplace I have wanted to visit for years. It is one of Paul's favorite places in England, and I can see why.

In the early 1100's, eleven Benedictine monks from York (sounds like the beginning of a racy limerick, doesn't it?) decided to break off from the order and join the more stict Cistercian order. They found a benefactor who gave them some land ...
