Historical Traveler Reviews The Quadrant Hotel And Suites Auckland
After an experience across town that I'd rather forget, the search was on for a new hotel. We stumbled across this one and were surprised at the rates for what was on offer (especially in comparison with our last stop).
Modern studio that was kitted out so that you could cook if you desired. Views across the docks and back towards the Museum on the hill.
Super friendly staff, wireless broadband available, magazines to borrow from the lobby. Excellent budget hotel that doesn't look it!
This trip was a quick decision to escape between christmas and new year. As there was less than a week between booking and arrival my choice was limited.
I had a one-bedroom apartment, and the view over the harbour was lovely. The furnishings were ok, but not spectacular. The bathroom was very small and there was patches of paint missing from the walls - right down to the gyp-rock.
Breakfast was nice, but served in plastic containers - different.
The saving grace was that the staff were nice and well informed. And were able to answer any question I posed. Top marks to David the barman.
Would I stay there again? Probably but would see what else was available first.
Cool hotel and excellent value for money
We spent 3 nights at the Quadrant and had a great time. It was very clean, and the staff were helpful. The bathroom is small but it has everything you need and overall the hotel represents excellent value for money. We loved the lobby area which is very chilled, and the place is spotless. Ignore the bad reviews of this place, it is really nice. The kitchen facilities in the room are a really nice touch and the overall finishes are spot on. We would definitely stay here again. You wont find anything that will compare for this price.
Average but good value for money
Similiar to the previous reviewers, we also got a good internet rate of $99 per night for a studio apt. When we arrived we noticed a smell in the room which we eventually traced to the carpet. We contacted reception who offered to move us to another studio. We were moved to a studio on a low level with a lovely view of a brick wall as opposed to the view of the harbour which we had previously. So we were basically downgraded because the carpet wasn't clean. Back again to reception ( with all our luggage) and they then gave us a 1 bed apt which was lovely.
Overall, good value for the price, great location but average service.
Strange blend of good and bad
What a strange place. Spent 2 nights here on a flying business trip. Got a bargain-basement rate of NZD99 per night since I selected the "no maid service" option, which is fine by me for just 2 nights. The room reminded me of London or New York hotels I've stayed at because of its microscopic size (I stayed in a Studio apt). For myself it was fine: if there had been 2 of us, it would have been another matter. It was nicely furnished and had a well-equipped kitchenette. WiFi worked fine (though the price at NZD 20/day - one of a range of options - is an irritation). Reception and service in general was friendly and helpful. The things that bothered me were: (1) Downstairs cafe for breakfast does not do a buffet: menu ordering only. As a result, breakfast is a leisurely affair, since the few staff on hand were stretched to the limit serving the large number of people. Many guests were sitting on the lounge furniture since the regular cafe tables were all full, since they were unable to turnover the tables quickly. On the other hand, the breakfast menu is good (lots of appetising selections), and nicely presented; (2) In-room documentation consists of a DVD that you have to pop into the DVD player, and then figure out how to use ... there are no instructions. Even though I'm an IT professional, I struggled to figure out the symbols on the remote control units, and it took me 10 minutes to find out what digit to dial on the room phone in order to get an external line. I can imagine that techno-phobic guests would be totally frustrated; (3) No air-con: just ducted air ... my room was stifling on arrival, so I had the balcony door open the entire time I was in the room - just as well it was mild outside during my stay; (4) The little driveway apron in front of the hotel only accommodates about 2.5 cars, so with taxis, delivery vans, and valet-parked cars coming and going, you can find yourself stuck for a while, either returning to the hotel in the evening, or trying to escape in the morning. Apart from that, it's hard to argue with that price, given the overall standard, and the location. Would consider staying again for short visits, given the price.
New, Clean, Nice, Good value
I stayed at the Quadrant in mid October for 4 nights. I'm a Kiwi but don't know Auckland very well so I spent a lot of time reading forums and comparing website information. Eventually I selected the Waterloo Quadrant and was very pleased with the decision.
I booked about 6 weeks in advance and the room rate was US$68/night which is cheap. US$85 -100 would be fair for the quality and location. I found a discount site which indicated $70 rate was possible (normal rate US$85/night) then rang the Quadrant and booked directly.
Contrast this with BK'S Pioneer Motor Lodge near the airport which politely refused to match a website discount rate. They don't have to but as a result I spent even less and stayed at the Airport Gateway Best Western for $US57. It was great - basic, a bit tired, but convenient and perfect for one night. Shuttle service to the airport. I'd stay again.
Back to the Quadrant. I had a studio apartment on the 17th floor which was really just a hotel room plus simple kitchen facilities. Nice view over the Port of Auckland and harbour. The building is brand new, sauna, spa-pool, and gym on the ground floor. Small facilities but no crowd.
Queen bed, the down pillows were a nice touch. Tiny dining table with designer holes in it which might look good but ain't too clever. No easy chairs, just solid dining chairs. Small shallow balcony but very pleasant and reasonably private.
Drawbacks? No dish-cloth or pot scrubber - seemed a pretty basic omission for a kitchen. Two of everything only - plates etc, but I suppose that makes it easier to manage. This is a room for 2, not 3 although a young child could be fitted in on the floor. No room for a stretcher.
Personally I found the location to be perfect. The Quadrant is beside the Hyatt, 2 blocks from Queen Street, 3 blocks from the Viaduct basin. There is a supermarket 2 blocks north towards the harbour, Albert Park and Auckland University grounds are immediately across the street to the south, and the Auckland Domain and Museum are a 10 minute walk to the west.
Valet parking at $US16/day is available. Coming from rural New Zealand I initially balked at this but quickly realised that in Central Auckland it was a good deal.
I'd happily go back to the Quadrant.
The Quadrant a chic hotel
We decided to stay overnight in Auckland after a wine tasting and found the new Quadrant Hotel via the internet. It's first attraction ws the great price via the Quadrant's website. The location to visit the inner city is good, it's also close to the moterway on ramp, and they offer valet prking at the standard rate. We stayead in a studio room, their smallest I believe and it suited our purposes to a T Comfortable bed, god shower and even a small kitchenette. The room was fresh and clean, we even had a little view of the harbour if you craned your neck. I ordered room service breakfast and it was promptly delieved in a small snack box and was very good. They do not supply a mini bar, you have to ask for one and no sky tv. As we were not interested in either it was no detraction from the good experience. The studio is not large, but I believe if you want more space book the one bedrom. We would stay again for a quick visit int the city.
Not and Business Hotel
I stayed in this so called "Hotel" this week and was very surprised to find that it is actually student accommodation for the university accross the road. The room was small with nice furnshing however the bathroom was very small.
The wireless access is very expensive compared to other hotels that I stayed in that week throughout NZ.
Staff were very nice, however I wouldnt stay there again.
Great position and staff, shame about the rooms
We stayed there for 3 nights this week and found the location good (next to the Hyatt) The staff were also helpful and friendly, however the rooms and the public spaces let the building down. The restaurant which is only open for breakfast is in a dark area off the elevators with some tables against the elevator wall. Most of the public space is taken up with a long ramp leading to the tower that contains the rooms. The rooms themselves had a good aspect of the harbour ,(But ask for a room that "misses" the property next door otherwise you will be looking at someone else's living room) but were strangely designed with too much space in corridors and a too large kitchen and laundry and a too small bathroom- in fact one of the smallest bathrooms we have seen in a modern property. The bedrooms were very small too with only one tiny closet between them. A shame because it bills itself as a trendy place with cutting edge design but the design does not live up to its billing.
