... Mangrove islands. We could walk through various eco-systems via a raised boardwalk that permitted us to get up close and very personal with a large variety of wildlife: numerous species of birds and, of course, the ever present alligator. Speaking of alligator, we did dine at a local eatery that served alligator "bites" as an appetizer. It sort of tastes like chicken, but is chewier than chicken; it was quite delicious. One very elusive ...

... 38-mile drive on Tuesday through the Everglades National Park took us to Flamingo, a town on the Florida Bay. The drive was unspoiled by billboards and fast-food restaurants - it was strictly nature preserved the way America looked centuries ago. There is a large marina there, where boats go out for tours. We went on a 1 1/2 hour boat tour into the Back Country. The boat we were on was a pontoon. It was very hot ...

We eventually met up near the visitor center and took another walk through a trail called the Gumbo Limbo Trail. This one sent us deep into the jungle like section of the park. I found this scary too as it got very dark and it was windy with no end in sight. Maybe I should work on my survival skills more? ...

... but they didn't let me. On the way over there we stopped to get some of Mr. C ice cream. I had strawberry, dulce de leche and reese's pieces. My mom had rum raisin and pistachio. Adela had reese's pieces, cheesecake and oreo. Dad decided to share with all of us. It was all homemade and it was sooo good! On the way back I knocked out. Then we came back to the hotel. Good ...

      Day 3: Treasure Coast

... of the fruit fields that surround the busy, little city. We came to our usual hotel The Floridian, only to find that there was a long line to check in. It was hard to find a room here. I wondered if there was a race in town at the huge NASCAR track or if many others were funneled here with the same idea I had. The lobby was beautifully and newly painted with scenes of Florida wildlife from the Glades, Biscayne Bay, and the Keys. Behind the lobby desk was a mural ...
