      ... rather then pay a hostel. Camping in Japan is allowed, nobody will come after you for trespassing. It is however not really common, as people who do this are more from the poorer side of society. So by passers may look a bit strange at you, but seeing you are an "alien", you are excused.
      Some of the money I saved for not booking a hostel, I spend for a wonderful meal in a restaurant, Japanese food really is great.
