Good Morning Vietnam!

... streets and we're back on track.

We arrived the train station in Bien Hoa without a minute to spare as train to Nha Trang that was leaving in 5 minutes. 190,000 dongs later, we're in the train heading up north while feasting the visual marvels of the Vietnamese countryside.

After we have pass Muong Man, something was not right. I began to do a recalculation of the distance and to ...

Crazy Ho Chi Minh City!

Where has the sun gone, the rain had returned, luckily we had a ticket out of Mui Ne early morning to Saigon. We had booked through Sihn Cafe as this is the only bus service we have had good experiences with. As we arrived at the cafe we got straight on the bus to find out we were the only ones going to HCMC this morning. After half an hour of the bus driver stopping to see if he can make some extra cash by picking up any locals, we were on our way layed across the seats fast ...

... we were completely floored when the manager came over and said that, as we were "long-termers", we had the option of vietnamese noodle soup for breakfast (which, of course, we accepted). It was heaven in a bowl... The next day, however, this new and exciting option seemed to have been withdrawn and we were back to bread and eggs for the rest of our stay!

Finally, the final highlight (which isn't technically in Saigon) was:

... get English teaching jobs in Vietnam and how much they paid. So I began thinking. Always a dangerous occupation. Initially as I had been so excited about going back to Oz and had a flight booked I immediately dismissed staying in Vietnam thinking it was a good idea but bad timing. However after a sleepless few hours on the bus and my brain doing overtime I cautiously ventured questions such as - how much does it pay, how easy is it to get jobs, what about visas and ...

... they are essentially African – paternalistic, wife does all the work, if you have no male child you are not regarded as male enough – all those things. The interesting thing is that here they take fatherhood and segregation a step further - if one does not have a male child one is not allowed to sit at the same table as the “real men”. Can you imagine what this must do to the ego? Anyway they drink to make it go ...

... a lot of potential.

It seems that the last decades of wars are further behind, and young people no longer identify themselves with them, and can live a very positive life. I can see now happiness in the faces of the people, something I could not really see often when I first visited your country in 1995. Now, your people have more money, more possibilities, more opportunities, and your children will probably have even more that what you have today. This is also very ...
