Left Kuala Lumpur hotel at 9am for a 12.25 flight to Bangkok. All ran smoothly until I arrived as there was no-one to pick me up!! After madly searching for the co-ordinator, and buying a phone card and failing miserably in getting in touch with anyone I opted for the "get a taxi to the hotel myself" option. Arrived after some time and booked safely into my room, which is lovely. Sharing with Rachel who I met in South Africa at Offbeat Safaris, so it is nice to share a room with someone I alr...
Bangkok, Thailand, Thailand barbarasyearCough, cough - splutter splutter... back in stinky old Bangkok!! At least we were acclimatised and the hotel had a pool! We only had a day to see things, so hot-footed around to a few places: the Grand Palace area was amazing, so much detail in the older parts - incredible colour and intricate mosaics, the different layers of the various centuries. The only way to grasp any meaning to what you saw was by using the 'tour guide' headphones, so you couldn't help feeling like a proper tourist (mi...
Bangkok, Thailand craftybubesAnd so to my final destination, Thailand. As is the norm now, my flight was delayed a couple of hours...so I hit the bar!! Gave me time to buy Debbie a present...hope she likes it but if not, there's always Ebay. In fact she'd probably make a profit!!! First impression of Bangkok....traffic. I have never seen traffic (or driving) like it....and that was just the pilots taxi-ing the planes!!! Wild horses wouldn't make me hire a car and drive in Bangkok. Hotel was ok, a long way from the seedie...
Bangkok, Thailand dingleqIt's been four months since we've been away, and if we had a pound for every time we've said 'this is the life', we'd be able to buy a new tumble dryer with enough change for an Amstrad mini hi-fi. It's been a really relaxing third of a year, a year when the hour between 6pm and 7pm has become our new favourite hour of the day watching sunsets around the world, whereas a few months ago it would have been a 'lost hour' commuting. It seems a lifetime ago when we saw Blur at Heathrow beginning t...
Ko Lanta, Thailand escapetheraceSawasdee Ka! Between the two of us, we know quite a few people who have ventured to Thailand so we felt reasonably clued up on where to go, what to watch out for and how to haggle. Thanks to a reasonably in-depth picking-of-brains from Rachelle and Cat & Matt, we had a fantastic time and made the most of our five day shopping stop in Bangkok (thanks guys!). Our second foray into Bangkok airport was more successful than the first for the simple reason that we managed not to lose each other...
Bangkok, Thailand francethedanceLike predicted, upon arriving in Bangkok I discovered that I would be making this trip without my luggage. One interesting thing I've noticed though unrelated to that is when flying and traveling almost everyone uses hospital masks in fear of the Swine Flu. Several people on the trip even encountered airplane searches where everyone was checked with a thermal scanner. I had the pleasure of going through those when I landed. After I discovered that my bags were missing I just went on my way, t...
Bangkok, Thailand hurleychick86Number of things. 1) Tommy our Tour guide is legit...he even says legit and he's Thai lol 2) I have figured out how to make my blogs notes on facebook for easy access for everyone! 3) MY BAG FINALLY CAME! Anyways last night we went to dinner and Thai dance which was awesome. The food was great and the show was awesome, I just didn't really understand the story...because it was all in Thai lol. Afterwards we went to this Bazaar where I found more awesome dresses to add to my collection! My lug...
Bangkok, Thailand hurleychick86Well we arrived safely, did not get to see much of Doha (just the airport) and the flight across went well. I have to say how impressed we were with Qatar airways they really were superb and the long flights slipped by with constant snacks treats and the use of the onboard films and games. The food also was excellent and I will not hesitate using them again if the chance comes up. Bangkok was full of nutters and every one of them drives a taxi! We trailed up and down looking for the best way...
Bangkok, Thailand j3sterSlept ok last night, woke at 2am and read a bit still not caught up on the jet lag just yet. I'm now blogging this on the Saturday while on a coach but we will come to that soon. Breakfast is a feast and I had curry, egg and bacon sandwich, corn flakes (of a sort) and fruit. We then hit the big shopping area, 8 floors of wall to wall tat. My kind of paradise, I love my shopping but since clearing my flat and throwing out much of my life I am much less prone to picking up bit I do not need. I ...
Bangkok, Thailand j3sterGot a good sleep last night and went off to breakfast a bit late. We are heading out to the kings palace today, we barter with taxi driver (our daily ritual now) and off we go. The palace is Amazing! you have to dress proper like no shorts allowed, the king is like a god here and very highly respected and his palace portraits that, every building (and there are lots) are covered in Gold. I spot a tour guide with a group and we slip in for the free ride and information, we get to hear about th...
