Dag 7,8 - Entering the warzone around Hue

I had a brother at Khe Sahn, fighting of to the Viet Cong, they're still there, he's all goneeeeeeeee ... Born in the USA. 's Morgen tegen 11 uur komen ...

The sun is out in Hue!

Train arrived 8am yesterday morning and got taken to Thai Binh Hotel to check out whether we wanted to stay there. Got a double room with tv and shower for $6 in a nice little alley. Went for a wander and stumbled upon 'Cafe with Thu wheels' where Thu (the owner)showed us some of the travellers recommendations. We were going to do a boat tour down the Perfume river to see the sights which costs about $2 for an 8 hour trip inc lunch! Sounded like it was too good to be true and turned out (acco...

Our next stop was Hue and after a 5 hour bus journey we arrived in the early afternoon and settled into our hotel, the Thai Bin. Hue is the capital city of Thừa Thiên - Huế province, Vietnam. Between 1802 and 1945, it was the imperial capital of the Nguyễn Dynasty. As such, it is well known for its monuments and architecture. Its population stands at about 340,000 people. The city is located in central Vietnam on the banks of the Sông Hương (Hương River), just a few miles in...

DAY 1 Arrived in Hue battered and bruised from the bus. Breakfasted and completed a walking tour of the city, visiting the massive old citadel and the towns delightful raw-dead-things and conical hats market. The hotel we stayed in had ESPN so Rob was at long last united with the sports viewing he had missed so much. As the dull someone boring vs. someone else boring 90 minutes began, I began my usual sports watching antidote and counted the right angles in the room. DAY 2 A country is shaped...

From Hanoi to Bangkok and Home.

Hi Everybody, We left off in Hanoi, Vietnam. Tragically hours after writing our last travel pod our digital camera was stolen! This is what happened. We were eating kebabs on the street corner of "Hang Gai" where the camera was allegedly pick-pocketed. All we remember is that one moment I was telling this book peddler, "no thank-you" and the next minute while walking away Simon noticed the camera was gone?! We rushed back to the kebab stand, frantically searching for our precious camera. I ev...

Friendly Hue

Its a fairly short hop by bus from Hoi An to Hue. En route, we unexpectedly stop at Marble Mountain, a town that specialises in stone sculptures made from the local marble. The town is lined with endless shops and workshops all unimaginatively selling bits of stone. In the carpark, the sound of power-tools is deafening and a layer of white dust covers everything. I see ten foot tall Mother Marys and five ton Buddha's displayed alongside delicate bangles and mortar and pestles. Stone is not an...

We arrived in Hue at 8am after our 13 hour bus journey and got off the bus disoriented in lashing rain. We had no hotel booked and were HOUNDED by local Vietnamese men trying to drag us to their hotels. They actually followed us on our 15 min walk trying to find the Thai Binh 1 Hotel (some other travellers told us it was ok) and all the way trying to guide us down this street and that street so that we would pass their hotel and go and have a look. One thing we have noticed about accommodatio...

Hue - Catch Up!

Arrived at midday and dropped off at Thai Binh 2 Hotel. We were showed a room on top floor, great view of city. It was the penthouse of the place and for only $28 US was too expensive after Hoi An shopping. Took the slightly more budget option at $12 just down the road at the sister hotel. Tried to contact Yenly (mum and dad's friend from Port Lincoln) and a friend from uni. Managed to meet up with both which was great. Mandy didn't recognise Yenly at first on a moto and helmet as she was bac...

Hue is a surprisingly big place after the quaintness of Hoi An, finding the backpacker (cheapskate) area we come across Thai Binh hotel and 4 of us share a room together. Across the road is Cafe on Thu Wheels run by a mad Vietnamese woman called Thu greeting us with 'top of the morning to you lads' in her squeaky Vietnamese voice. Food is cheap, as is beer and the music is good; spending the rest of the afternoon there admiring all the plays on the word 'Thu' that adorn the wall. In the eveni...
