Jalan Tasek Lama Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, BS8670, 673-2243554
Our Malaysian bus driver taking us upto the border crossing was just the nicest guy in the world. Knew him for an hour and he even walked upto our new bus and waved us off. Malay's are so friendly it's untrue. Just had to get that in. I wanted to run back across the border and hug him but also didn't want to get shot by a border guard. As our hangovers brew on in our heads we stamp out of Sarawak and onwards into Brunei, the darn richest place ever. It's billed as a fairly strict Islamic Stat...
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei danstravelworldOne of the amusing aspects of this trip is that you come across the odd country, which you hadn't originally intended to visit, and in some cases didn't even know exactly where they were! Well, one of these is Brunei, a tiny sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo island (sharing the island with Indonesia and Malaysia). So, if you've got some time, and some space in your passport for the obligatory additional stamps, then hop on to the plane (or boat) to Brunei. My first, and probably last ...
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei garybarnesWe started our day by hiking around the town. First we went to get some breakfast and check out the CENTRAL MARKET. It was very small but had some food we could buy. Then we continued on to explore the town. Literally you can walk around the town in 30 minutes. We checked out the YAYASAN COMPLEX which is a giant shopping mall. Then when we were leaving the rain started to fall...then storm. We had to hang out at the mall for awhile and then saw in the distance a little cafe on the river...we ...
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei heather555Sat Sep 18th - Day 145 We spent the morning at the Labuan War cemetry, paying our respects to the nearly 4000 Commonwealth Servicemen who lost their lives in Borneo during the Second World War. Mostly Australian nad British the row upon neat row of headstones also contains those men who died on the Sandakan to Ranu death marches. The vast manuicured lawns have beds of beautiful flowers and shrubs between the rows of white headstones. All the headstones house a small bronze plate bearing an ep...

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei ilari... s using the beds opposite us who spent most of the night talking loudly, burping and then snorting with laughter.

The following day’s excursion involved climbing the Pinnacles, which is a collection of sharp limestone needles that cling to a volcano and poke up through the surrounding jungle. The hike to the viewing point takes four hours and is a very steep and slippery climb which involves the use of ropes and handholds, requiring free ...
Limbang, Sarawak, Malaysia butterfillsWe had not originally planned to visit Brunei when we planned this trip, but the logistics of going around it were too difficult for us to organise so we decided to go through it. It is a very small country, not in the Middle East, but in the middle of Borneo on the coast. We took the bus across the border and then changed buses to head to Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), the capital. We checked into the only budget accommodation they have, an incredibly clean hostel. Due to the strict ...

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei france_rejeanIf you are traveling from Sarawak to Sabah or vice versa, you may be tempted to travel over land thru the Kingdom of Brunei. If you are on a tight budget, I'd say you could easily skip this country and fly to KK or Miri for cheaper than trying to travel overland and you wouldn't miss much. The prices are similar to Malaysia except instead of using Ringgit, you are paying in Brunei Dollars which is pegged to the Singapore Dollar and used interchangeably in either country. Brunei will cost ...
