      Touring Tour

A travel blog entry by lcmckay on Oct 18, 2014

Today we said good bye to our French hosts and head to Tour for the night. I really wanted to spent at least one night here as I had built myself up to visiting while back home and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around lunch time and spent the afternoon wandering the streets and shopping, it is a beautiful town just like most in central France. I spend far too much shopping I think I am all shopped out now my bag ...

... because an adapted version of them we have today! Da Vince never actually manufactured any of his inventions because he was so busy designing new ones. But, a company called IBM took Leonardo's designs, followed them precisely and made models of what they would have looked like had Leonardo made them! Some ideas you may recognize include a parachute, circular life buoy, flippers, a military tank and even a 3 wheeled car! Pretty amazing!

It also had magnificent gardens which Max admired with envy! Apparently they have 13 full time gardeners plus apprencitices! Our day concluded with wine tasting where we learnt to distinguish the taste between grapes grown in sandy soil and that grown in more chalk based soil and wines ...

Drove across more pretty county, more corn, sunflowers and grapes. Arrived at Tours. Booked our chateaux tour for tomorrow. Then went to find a campsite and have lunch. Set off for Amboise, where we went to Clos Lucé, a small chateau/country house built in 1590. It was given in 1516 by King Francis 1st to Leonardo Da Vinci. The latter spent his last 4 years there and died in 1519. ...

Day trip to see castles in France!! This was the only organized tour we took on the trip. We met our guides and bus at an office close to the Louve and headed Southwest of Paris to the Loire Valley. There are hundreds of chateaus in the valley and we were going to tour 3 of the most famous and accessible. The first chateau we arrived at was Chambord. It is the biggest chateaux we toured and was originally a hunting ...
