Weirdly enough, the name Furnas is pronounced exactly like the device that heats our homes. And it is a main area for volcanic heat on the island. Our day started off in sunshine with clouds. Hurray! First stop was a black sand beach for me to get my feet in the ocean. The water was cold even for hearty Canadians. There is also a collection of deer which made the cutest noises, unlike the African geese who threw a fit whether you came near or walked away.

Angra do Heroismo, a city with formidable history that sets the scene for the beautiful stories lived there now.
