They also have air-con on full and are good places to cool off and buy some very cheap cold drinks or ice cream. We looked at a couple of guesthouses before eventually choosing a large hotel which one day must have been quite grand but was now a bit rundown. It had cheap rooms though and made a change from our usual lodgings (it even had a lift!).

The best thing in Phrae (apart from the locals) was the food, and we spent some happy hours scouring the little night market stalls for our evening meal. For 30 or 35 baht (about 60 or 70p) we ate plates or fried noodles with red pork, or big bowls of noodle soup with wontons; followed by some fried Japanese octopus balls, little chunks of octopus tentacle in a batter, liberally drenched in mayonaise and Japanese sweet ...
