... to discover where we were from then her English ran out, our Thai, having never started. We are, however, becoming more proficient by the day at discovering what food stalls have to offer. We know the words for beef, pork, chicken and are gradually learning what we can expect from certain dishes. We have even discovered the trick of checking which condiments are available on the table. The more there are the less likely the soup is to be spicy as one can then add ...

... river rafting. Best day so far on trip I reckon. At night we went around Chiang Mai. So relaxed here and still a lot of backpackers but no where near as commercial. We lost our cards so no poker. Pool score now 22-29 Kindred. We went to watch another Muay Thai night. Was in a pool hall which was huge bonus. We watched 9 fights. One with children; about 7 years old, and one with women; English girl whooped the Thai girl. The ...

... a signboard saying "elephant hospital" and I couldn't help myself to stop to go see what can be an elephant hospital and what it looks like...This was the high of the day and very interesting. There was an elephant that just gave birth to a 5 year old weighing 70 kg...and apparently it can go up to 100kg. Basically a small baby is born my weight and a big baby is born my father's weight! (Je rigole ...

Chiang Mai - kickboxing, bazaars, mountain temple!

We arrived in the morning in Chiang Mai. I needed a good stretch, as sleeping on a train bed is not the most comfortable of things - there was a lot of cracking of body parts as I was doing this, which made a couple of the girls jump! The hotel was basic but comfortable. Everybody decided that a Thai massage was a good idea - I went for the head/foot massage, as I'm not too keen on massages. Even that was quite painful, and left me feeling sore for the rest of ...

Arrivee a Chiang Mai

... importantly) BLANKETS! But on this bus - nothing! It didn't seem to have much of a personality, but Shaun was a good laugh so i did alright....He also lent me his jumper when i started whinging that i was cold, which was an added bonus. :) Anyway - my room in Chiang Mai is fine, and at first impression, i really like it here - it is already a million times nicer than Ayutthaya just to look at it. More to follow.... Lots of love.x

Home Away from Home

... and up until four years ago complete without electricity. He did return to the states long enough to get further biblical education and meet the lovely Jasmine, but his home, as he'll tell you, is here.... I'll take this moment to mention that this separation from "mainstream society" isn't readily apparent in Allen; in fact, it showed up only once over our three day visit... when Peter played Bob Marley and Allen admitted to never having heard his ...

In a longtail boat up the Kok River to Chiang Rai

From Thaton, we journey along the Kok River in longtail boats towards Chiang Rai. At some times of the year, we may need to travel by minivan due to the low water level. The trip along the Kok River allows us time to enjoy the hilly surroundings and look out for small villages, which are home to various hill tribe people. We overnight in a comfortable and centrally located hotel in Chiang Rai town.

... boy's friends and hung out at a local place. Sunday, we got up a little earlier (10am). We went out for some breakfast by the lake. I noticed a netted area in the lake and watched a man feed these huge catfish. THe area was just absolutely teeming with the fish. I asked him through miming if I could feed them too, and he handed me a bag of fish food. I never have seen so many huge fish in my life. It was so ...
