After our siesta, we walked up the hill from where we are staying into Montalcino. It's a quaint little town with amazing views. Looking forward to exploring more of Tuscany tomorrow.
... We were able to use some of what we learned in our Italian class to communicate pretty well, but it was still a little difficult. We have a nice apartment with a living area/kitchen and bedroom. There are beautiful views of the valley and the vineyards on the property. Tom had made reservations at a really nice restaurant nearby for my birthday. It was the end to a very nice day! ... of Siena come together twice a year to race with each community sporting their own flag, colors, etc. The horses are all part of generations old Arabian blood lines and from what I gathered it's quite the event. We missed the race by a day, it took place on July 2nd, which is okay with us. We were there to see the city and the cathedral.

We are trying to find the correct entrance to and through a medieval walled city. If you think of Hollywood there are legions of knights and horseman prancing through archways and cobbled lanes. ... stops. In the Piazza del Campo they have been packing dirt down on the cobbles for the Palio. It was pretty wild to watch. They add layers of fine reddish dirt that must have some clay in it, then spray it down and flatten it with trucks. And repeat. I'm not sure how many layers, but it's 3' thick of hard packed dirt that now feels almost as ************e.
