WELCOME TO CUBA- LIFE BEHIND THE IRONIC CURTAIN

... bandaged back, third eye blind, etc. Pragmatic women are not to be outdone. They'll follow you back to your hotel and THEN approach you, as if proximity implies acceptance. After a quick inconclusive chat in the Paseo del Prado, one even snuck through the door of my apartment complex while I was holding it for a key-less elderly lady. They're quick, and stubbornly persistent. And oh yeah, Cuba's got a long hard road ahead. They're good people ...

Havana - It's not what we expected

... from right outside. We soon realised, having caught the bus, that we could've saved so much time that day had we bought ourselves tickets earlier on in the day. The bus went everywhere we'd walked that day. And not only that, it's pretty much a hop on, hop off bus and your ticket lasts the entire day. Anyways, at least the bus showed us a few markets and restaurants that we hadn't stumbled upon that day. It gave us a few ideas for the next time we would be in Havana.

Our man back in Havana

... Cuban musical chairs has me sharing the journey with multiple seat partners making sleep a distant memory. Our final stop before the end of my last Viazul bus journey and I strike up conversation with a Danish couple, Rune and Sara, who are equally cold and commented on my attempts to use the seat head covers to provide much-needed additional heat to my frostbitten toes. Finally arrived in Havana, I introduce Alex and Aurelie to Rune and Sara and ...

Mas o Menos

... up and opened the door to his classic '57 Chevy convertible. It wasn't in the best shape but it was still pretty cool nonetheless. I asked him if he has trouble maintaining the car given it's age. He quickly replied, "ma meno". "Ma meno" has become a common phrase that Angela and I have grown accustom to during our stay here. It's really pronounced "Mas o Menos" - which means more or less. But for the locals, they drop the "s ...

Sarah: Havana, Cuba - Castro and Cocomobiles

... Habana ( Cuban spelling and pronunciation) was going to a baseball game between Habana and Guantanamo. It cost us one national peso to get in (about 5c) and it was pretty cool, standing for the Cuban national anthem with the whole crowd, and of course I´d never seen a live baseball game before. Habana , at least the historic centre, is so old, run down and dirty. Most of the buildings look like they haven´t seen a paint brush in 50 years. However ...

Back in London

... our chance and got into any old taxi. Luckily the casa lady, ania was waiting for us. Day 2....Woke up to meet the others staying in the casa, a french guy, Laurent and a Argentinian girl, Gisela. Gisela met some random cubans online, so we dropped by their house for a visit. They spoke in spanish and i tried my best to follow, joining in with the conversation wasn't a real option....i'm still on tourist spanish! :-) Walked around the posh neighbourhoods and ...

Cuba

... people, but that that was the older generation and things should move onward now. One person said that they see it as two stubborn old grandfathers, feuding, each refusing to give in (Castro vs. U.S. presidents). I stayed in a Casa Particular, in a privat home, which was great. It was in Habana Vieja, close to everything. I love to walk and I found Havana to be a good walking city. Prices are high, considering the local economy. You can live ...

Crazy Cuba

... of them. - The music- it is literally everywhere in Havna and you can't go a minute without hearing some music blaring somewhere, whether it be from a restaurant, someone's house or car. Most restaurants have a house band playing and it is a great way to spend an afternoon drinking mohitos and watching the band do their thing. - the dancing that goes along with the music. How do they do it so well??? - the mohito ...
