    ... so we had to buy one. After this we drove back to Xian and visited the Grey Goose Pagoda which dates back to the Tang dynasty. It once housed all the original documents about Buddhism which a monk brought back from India. These were all destroyed thanks to Chairman Mau during the Cultural Revolution. Thankfully the Pagoda remains intact.

    ... with 8 million people. The climate is awesome in the 50s and 60s this time of year and it is nice not to be zoiling with the Careys. The area where we are staying is very green and mitigates the pollution to a degree. I am excited to run outside. It is hard to believe on the 29th we will have been gone for 4 months.

    Happy early Halloween. We need to find a candy store. Everyone is excited for American Food tonight.

    ... even in Xian, which is further south, it is FREEZING. We had a very heavy fog and rain all day. After dinner, we just could not get our room warm. When I called down to ask if something was the matter with the heating system, I was told that the Central Government controls all heating, so there is no heat allowed. I asked her when this started (thinking maybe 5:00 or 6:00pm) and was told March 17. One of the joys of being in a centrally-planned economy I guess.

    ... saw a large bald patch under his chin also.

    We tried asking if the keepers knew why but interestingly the response was we don;t know, we don;t know much about the red pandas.

    Claire found some information online and confirmed it looked like a sign of stress. Alongside the information was taht they need an open place, higher points to sit, food to be in several places for foragng like enrichment, and also some private places eg large bushes for them to get away from ...
