... driver, Ketut picked us up at noon and we were about to learn why our guide book suggested that hiring a driver is much safer than renting a car. The roads are narrow, the traffic chaotic and for every car there are at least 20 scooters and 1 or 2 large trucks. Scooters pass on the left and right side and frequently drive on the wrong side. That day turned out to be our only day outside Kuta (later IŽll explain why) so I tried to put down some general observations I had made on Bali.

  • Bali has a great infrastructure which may sound surprising. All the main roads look like new, their surface is well marked and there are no potholes.
  • There is a lot of verdure on the island so we sometimes felt like driving through the jungle. Most villages werenŽt completely ...

... so much in the way of contentment, happiness and the pleasure gained from such minor things, with family and community life being at the heart of everything. Compared to Fiji though, in Indonesia the effect of globalisation is evident and the quest, among many, for more and materiality rather than pure spiritual contentment. This brings with it some disparity between the rich and the poor, and to the untrained eye, it would also seem that there is elements of corruption that result ...
