Vithei Charles De Gaulle, Road to Angkor Wat Siem Reap, Cambodia, 855-63-966-661
Christmas in Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) I did end up going to Angkor Wat (and surrounding ruins) for Christmas - and I am so happy I did. I arrived Christmas day and pretty much spent the day relaxing by the pool and planning my next couple of days. The hotel turned out to be really nice (hotels range from $5-750, so there is a huge range of options), mine was really clean and well situated to visit the top attraction (Angkor Wat). The town is pretty much comprised of 100's of 'hotels' and a pub ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia amincambodia Overland from Bangkok by bus to Aranya Prathet, then the fight begins to get to the other side of Poipet. I tried the 5:55am train from Hua Lomphong, but it wasn't going due to a strike so I jumped into a tuk tuk to get to Mochit bus station and just made the 7am to Aranya Prathet (Window number 30 for 207 BHT).
It's not bad as long as you know what you need and what to avoid. The recent blogs I read were right on. I got off the bus and agreed to a motorbike ride to the border for 50 ...
Finally met up with the newlyweds Scott and Lizzie. The night earlier we were able to spend a little time with the other Newlyweds Mike and Lisha and their tour group having a few drinks... lots of fun to see them and look forward to it again in August. Unfortunately that night when getting back to our room we discovered that Scott and Lizzie's flight had been delayed by 3 hours in London! We were worried that we might have to continue on the trip with out them, but luckily the connecting fli...
Siem Reap, Cambodia nate_and_katWow, What an amazing set of structures! The various temples were built between 900-1300 or so and the attention to detail was absolutely stunning. We had a wonderful guide who we hired for the day for $30 to take us around to each of the sites. Well worth it! The place is huge, it seems like each king that came along wantd to have a bigger and better temple built, the end result being many, many (far more than we could see in one day) But we saw the biggest and best. And as you can see by the...
Siem Reap, Cambodia nate_and_katUp at 4 am, in the shower, nibble on some fruit and pack it up. We are out the door and in a van at 5 am and on our way to the airport. We checked in and 2 people are closely examining our passports (they were soaked by the tubing in Vieng Vang) and it is difficult to make out the Laos Visa stamps. Bill is blaming Pi Mai for the problem and we are able to explain and point out all the required information. We go through the same thing with 2 more people at security, but are able to keep going...

Siem Reap, Cambodia theresabillBill is going to write his own version because we had 2 very different experiences today. We were up at 6 am because our driver is going to meet us at 7 am. I am not feeling well, so it took me a long time to get ready. It is getting late when we got down to the buffet. I ordered an omelette with ham, mushroom, peppers and tomatoes, toasted some slices of whole wheat baguette and picked up a few pieces of fruit. I am worried that the thought of food is making me nauseous. I was only able to e...
Siem Reap, Cambodia theresabill We are going to try to make up some ground today since I was so stupid to get sick in such an amazing place!!
We were up at 6 am. I had most of my omelet, toast, 1 piece of fruit and a croissant (they are very good here). Bill had an omelet, bacon and croissant.
It was just after 7 am when we met Mr Som and took the tuk tuk to Angkor Wat. This place is enormous and absolutely incredible. It is the busiest temple and the most restored. We went at a good time. We missed most of ...

... Pub. Then, we scouted the market for souvenirs.

It was at the market in the afternoon that I finally spotted something that I was looking for - the balut, a fertilised duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that was boiled and eaten in the shell. I paid for one egg and sat down to peel off the shell and devour the content with some salt and pepper while my friend, not ...
