Road Trippin' - Ruins, Rocks, and a Robot

... was named after three rather disappointing white, thin crosses which were unevenly stuck at the bottom of a hill.

On the way back we did another driver swap back around Humahuaca, and then headed towards Tilcara to fuel up, stopping along the way to appreciate some views which had missed on the journey up. We also stopped at the Tropic of Capricorn, which had a large sundial monument to mark it, and would you believe it? An arts and ...

day 8 - tilcara

slow realxign day today. Tilcara is a little mtn town perched at 6000 feet in the middle of the mtns. I got in around 6pm last night and although I was planning on hurrying to Bolivia, after walking around a bit decided to stay a day to slow down, soak up some mountain air and relax a bit before/after alot of moving. Immediately after getting off the bus I noticed two young thugish looking dudes sitting on bench, one nudged the other and pointed in my directions as if ...

Stripey Mountains

... in the valley walls twist your imagination with the thoughts of geological forces. Here our lonely planet book was as wide of the mark as when we went to take a boat trip in Pernambuco Brazil and found that the boat had sunk with passengers on it three years ago. It said that swimming under the waterfall was best in the morning when the sun was on the pool ...

Taking it slow in Tilcara

... crowing across the valley. The grounds are lovingly landscaped and include some great eucalyptus trees and plenty of shade, birds are always chirping, and we have even seen a couple of thunderstorms (the first rain for the season actually arrived with us on Thursday). Breakfast is on site with great coffee and views of the mountains. Blair and I have read a book each and he has done his fair share of sleeping. Patrick ...

Humahuaca and the Quebrada

... lot of time to keep us quite. I wanted to go to Humahuaca to see some ruins but we did not see anything apart from a folkloric show in a pena. We then return to Salta and my mother rewarded her driver by inviting me to eat .................. a bife de chorizo...

crossing into Argentina

... to figure out our plan and get a camera. Our original plan was to go to Patagonia and Southern Chile but after talking to people who had just been there we decided it would be too cold for us to really do anything there. And we were tired of the cold from Bolivia! P.S. Los Molles is a good place to stay if you are in town. Relaxed, hippy owners and great views.

Tilcara vacation

... especially during Pascua (easter). We took a two hour siesta, shopped in the big craft/market place, then went to a pena that night for some good traditional food and amazing amazing music! I was so tired from not sleeping the night before and kept falling asleep, but the music was good folkloric music with pan flutes, guitars, drums, and more. Friday the 21st - We rode horses around in the mountains and it was amazing. We got to see Tilmarca from above the city and ...

Into Jujuy via Quebrada de Humahuaca

Day 1 of our first tour started at 7 bells in a damp & dark Salta. With our German & British compatriots we ventured through northern Salta towards the province of Jujuy. Although the famous Tren a las nubes (cloud train) is not due to recommence operation until the start of april we loosely followed the circuit it takes. It starts in Salta at 1187m & ends at La Polvorilla at an altitude of 4220m in the clouds, hence the name. We saw the original train on the outskirts of Salta ...

where the canyons are pretty...

... go something like this: All villages in the Quebrada de Humahuaca MUST have - 1. a church - small, white, at least one bell tower. 2. a football field - grass not required. 3. houses that are primarily rectangle shaped, with 2 windows and 1 door on the front. You can choose the colour, but you must be different from your neighbour. 4. a plaza - so that, in the future, locals have somewhere to sell souvenirs to tourists. 5. streets must ...

Life in the Gorge

... mountains and multi-hued sides of the gorge. We had a pretty good parillada (our last in Argentina, it now seems) at Los Puestos, recommended by my clever brother and an even better lunch yesterday at a small place on Calle Belgrano whose name I cannot now recall (the menu is easier to remember: llama carpaccio to start, followed by pork with confit onions and fillet steak with a non-mustardy mustard sauce, and an unbelievably wicked chocolate ...
