Voyage to the North

... Juan Dolio. Matilda was meeting the bride for lunch ( I was also supposed to, but Sunday travel is slow, and I wanted to be sure I caught a bus), and then would travel back to the farm for one more night before heading back on Monday morning. I had to get back on Sunday, however, because I was teaching the next day. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the bus ride back to Santo Domingo...it was a direct route back to the capital, and only 3 hours. The ...

... community (men go for seasonal work).  The women recently learned how to make candles and bracelets, which they are allowed to go outside the Batey to sell, but have to "pay off" the checkpoint guards when they enter and exit the compound.  There are so many moral and ethical issues surrounding the Bateys, too numerous to mention.  The children came running to meet us, some naked, some ...

The only issue we had with the holiday which for us turned out not to be a problem is that both the Thomas Cook reps were on a day off on the day of our departure so if we had any major issues that day it would have been a problem. In my mind they should have split their day offs so as there was someone available every day. As it was we just had a couple of queries, which we managed to work around.

Learning Spanish in Santiago

... understanding what people are saying to me) is the food. Everything is fried, salty, and heavy. My host mother has only fed us fried foods and I have not had a single vegetable since I arrived. We also eat lunch every afternoon at a cafeteria around the block from the school. The only thing they serve that I like is brown rice and beans. So I guess I´ll have to get used to that. I went to the store today and bought some Pringles and ...

My first Dominican Republic trip - 2003

... Went swimming with dolphins for the first time in my life on my birthday. What a fantastic experience! I recommend that to anyone! We went waterfall climbing (we were actually IN the water climbing up rocks and getting water up our noses) with the assistance of guides. My Tran had it easy...she didn't know how to swim so she got to ride on the guide's back the whole time. There was Popeye's Pizza...a snack bar with a wonderful selection of tasty treats. There were ...

Independence Day

Hello and Happy 4th of July! Greetings from here in the Dominican Republic. I am back in the capital for a day after my adventures in the southwest celebrating the independence of our great nation. It turned out to be quite the adventure, some of which I will try to relay here. First of all, on Saturday a group of us who live up in the north headed down to the capital from Altamira after a night out celebrating Lauren's birthday on Friday. We got here ...
