Miracles are everywhere

... make the excursion to Tanzania this year to see if we can save the two children she carried home with her in her heart.

So, this morning, as we depart Arusha, it is with full spirits and much thanks. From nothing but the name of a resort town, we found the two girls in a landscape of sand and crevices. We met people along the way who were able to guide us to their families and I can't even begin to capture all of the miracles that unfolded ...

Kenya - My arrival in Mombasa

... white person in the vicintiy. One thing to note is just how cheap it is to eat and drink here. The local beer, Tusker, is around £1 in most bars although I have paid closer to 70p in some. As for the food, you could get a decent meal and a drink for around £2. Most of the food, which has been things like stews, rice dishes and fish, has been delcious although the concept of using one hand to eat and the other to swat flies away still has yet to grow on me!

Time to wrap up and head home for me

... it's enabled me to think long and hard about my own life's trials and tribulations; what and who mean a lot to me and what's just not worth it anymore, what's important and what is not, what is relevant and that which is not anymore, to be grateful for my health and the healthcare service that comes with being British, Do I want to stay in Africa and travel more? Not really when I listen to the many news channels out here; pretty much the same ...

Dear Dad

... is spelt in English and I'm sure it is called many names throughout the world; my understanding and experience is these dowhs are pretty much everywhere; when I visited Bahrain they were everywhere and I'd hazard a guess to say they exist in most under developed worlds that don't make their boats out of plastic! What a wonderful early evening; we set off yesterday at 4pm and watched the most beautiful sunset; we sailed up Mtwapa Creek about 3km ...

6 weeks in Mombasa!

... not as successful as the first - the turnout wasn't as good, we started hours late, the guest speaker arrived three hours late, and the MC went home sick. That aside, we still communicated our key messages and I'm sure made some difference, even if just a little bit. I am going to run out of time if I keep writing so much detail so I'll have to briefly summarize the rest of our activites. We visited the Universal Orphanage and school a couple of weeks ago ...

The eventful train journey from Mombasa

... moving again you couldn't help look at as we passed the poorly covered boy on the ground..... the first dead body I think I have seen..... not sure what else to say.. The last 2 hours on the train is through the national park and therefore we kept a look out for animals, which is where I saw my first wild animals. We arrived in Nairobi only about 2 hours late to then see the really heavy rains ( whilst hiding in the internet cafe)

Volunteering in Kenya

... positive babies that they have looked after have turned sero-positive and gone on to live healthy, normal lives. "We opened the home expecting the children to die," Mary reflected. "We thought if just one or two turned negative it was still worth it and the ones that died would die in dignity and would have been loved and cared for." Out of a total of 350 babies that the Beckenham's have cared for, only 27 have died. The medical explanation for ...

... service dining car. The window to our carriage had been smashed, David (just call him McGyver) managed to hold our blind down by wedging it closed with a shoe, the girls' next door had no glass in their window*. The dining car staff wore white uniforms which were last washed during the Raj, they had the hospitality skills of prison wardens and the service was silver in that about ten percent of the cutlery was left-over battered silver. In the morning we woke stationary ...
