We arrived in Arequipa after 12 at night, after yet another extremely challening bus ride. We travelled with Cruz Del Sur, the best toursit bus company in Peru. We were only 9 people in the bus from Nascato Arequipa, so we could stretch ourselves over more than one seat for a good night´s rest. Which Nicolene and Lindie can do, but Louise and myself really struggle to sleep on the buses. The first part of the journey was really beautiful. We started to travel south along the desert coastline,...
Arequipa, Peru carincronjeWe arrive in Arequipa early morning after an overnight bus from Nazca (which the air-con was set to 24 plus degrees). Arequipa has a population of 1 million and an elevation of hmm cant find it but high enough and Peru's second largest city. The hostel we are staying at is very nice, once again the people are lovely. It seems that there is only one other person staying at the hostel. It is a family run operation including a dog who only half understands the game catch, and a Siamese looking c...
Arequipa, Peru rachaelandersenOne of the trips we picked was mountain biking, which in my opinion is ridiculously expensive. I think the only reason it is so expensive is only tourists are interested in mountain biking and the activity is difficult to organise by yourself. The price we paid was USD 150 for two. We were picked up from our hostel and we drove up the volcano to 4,875 metres, which is the starting point. Then it is mostly down hill for 55 km until we reach Arequipa at an elevation of 2,325 metres. I have not ...
Arequipa, Peru rachaelandersenA 9hour overnight bus stretched out ahead of us requiring some steel and determination to ensure that we were not going to arrive in a completely wrecked state. So armed with some food, warm clothing and books we settled down into our 'beds'. The bus only travels overnight because Arequipa bus terminal is regarded as unsafe during the night – nobody is allowed in to collect arriving passengers until 0600. The hostal offered to collect us at 0700 and the welcome smile from Richardo was e...

... read about (and if you wanted to know about her more I think there is more accurate literature than my ramblings), but I do like to let you all know about the really good things we have done and this happened to be an unexpected highlight. Plus really nothing else happened in Arequipa apart from the fact we found a can of Tuna called ‘Fanny Tuna’ and I had an avocado with a funny shape stone in it!

Lots of Love

Amy and Studious Steve
Arequipa, Peru samsonite32... take a dead guinea pig, flatten it, and after a bit of cursory eviceration, they fry it and put it on a plate. The head is still on it. You know in fishmongers when they ask you if you want to keep the head of the fish on it, in case people are a bit sqeamish about removing the head themselves or seeing a head on a plate? Something tells me that's not really a consideration here - with fish or anything else. Quite right too - if you're going to eat it, you ...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru choosechu... t believe you can trust your first instincts, know this: The phrase "Don´t think, do" was a favourite catchcry of John Kennedy Senior, the coach of the Hawthorn Football Club in the 60s and 70s.

By following this advice the Hawks went on to win three flags under his guidance.

If AFL footballers can follow their first instincts and be correct, surely you can too.

So, next time you find yourself in a sticky situation; say three *****s, a half key of charlie ...
Arequipa, Peru robertvanfuckwt... the main event, which entailed the 3 elaborately dressed matadores engaging with a series of bulls ranging from agressive to lacklustre. It was our first time watching a bullfight, and it was quite entertaining, especially when random drunk guys from the crowd jumped down into the arena in an attempt to joust with the bulls, only narrowly escaping disaster. ( I saw a clip on TV of a Spanish bullfight injury, and it is pretty gruesome ...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru jon-daniella... are built of sillar (which is Spanish for white lavastone). Plaza de Armas is the central plaza where there are palm trees and many pigeons fed by the locals sitting there. I often sat here to read my guide book, or to just sit and watch life go by. The plaza is surrounded by the Cathedral and arcaded buildings with many restaurants and cafes. On one of the newsstands here I read a newspaper headline saying that Mourinho had quit Chelsea. After I read that ...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru sonnat25... in Arequipa, I decided doing some sight seeing. I had read about the Santa Catalina Monastery and it sounded interesting. It's like a small city within a city, very old and intensely colorful! It was a bliss for someone into photography, as the colors, contrasts, lights and shadows gave endless opportunities to experiment! I spent nearly the whole day in there, and it was just beautiful. I'd go back any day.

Then after Arequipa, I was headed to Arica, Chile.
