We arrived in Arequipa after 12 at night, after yet another extremely challening bus ride. We travelled with Cruz Del Sur, the best toursit bus company in Peru. We were only 9 people in the bus from Nascato Arequipa, so we could stretch ourselves over more than one seat for a good night´s rest. Which Nicolene and Lindie can do, but Louise and myself really struggle to sleep on the buses. The first part of the journey was really beautiful. We started to travel south along the desert coastline,...
Arequipa, Peru carincronjeWe arrive in Arequipa early morning after an overnight bus from Nazca (which the air-con was set to 24 plus degrees). Arequipa has a population of 1 million and an elevation of hmm cant find it but high enough and Peru's second largest city. The hostel we are staying at is very nice, once again the people are lovely. It seems that there is only one other person staying at the hostel. It is a family run operation including a dog who only half understands the game catch, and a Siamese looking c...
Arequipa, Peru rachaelandersenOne of the trips we picked was mountain biking, which in my opinion is ridiculously expensive. I think the only reason it is so expensive is only tourists are interested in mountain biking and the activity is difficult to organise by yourself. The price we paid was USD 150 for two. We were picked up from our hostel and we drove up the volcano to 4,875 metres, which is the starting point. Then it is mostly down hill for 55 km until we reach Arequipa at an elevation of 2,325 metres. I have not ...
Arequipa, Peru rachaelandersenA 9hour overnight bus stretched out ahead of us requiring some steel and determination to ensure that we were not going to arrive in a completely wrecked state. So armed with some food, warm clothing and books we settled down into our 'beds'. The bus only travels overnight because Arequipa bus terminal is regarded as unsafe during the night – nobody is allowed in to collect arriving passengers until 0600. The hostal offered to collect us at 0700 and the welcome smile from Richardo was e...

... Chachani things can quickly go wrong, which sadly they did.
On the way back down, the "prat" was walking miles ahead of us across the steep snow slopes of Fatima. Bjorn was walking about 10m in front of myself and Louise when we saw his legs wobble a few times and he collapsed under sheer physical exhaustion. Thankfully, he collapsed forwards into the snow. If he had collapsed sideways he would have tumbled hundreds of metres down into the steep valley below. He is one extremely ...
... within an 1 hour of the time it was suppose to leave I consider it on time. I noticed some other foreigners getting on the bus, but it wasn’t until the half way point that we ended up talking, Stephen from Germany and Joelle from Quebec. We all passed our Swine Flu inspection at the border and were granted access to Peru. It was nice that the bus company dropped us off at the border to do our paperwork and waited for us to walk across the bridge ...

It takes about an hour to fly from Lima to Arequipa. We spent more time in the airport, than flying ! As the plane lands, we had a preview of Arequipa´s terrain ... the Andes, some snowcapped mountains, and what seems to be like endless desert. Big cactus plants sprout from dry and arrid land. It felt blazing hot as we got out of the plane. We were met by Max, the owner of the B&B where we are staying. This couple was very ...
... We went for dinner with them then onto a bar. Me and Mikey decided to head back to the hotel after many drinks. Mikey was a little more worse for wear than me so I was leading the way. The hotel was only a 5 minute walk away but Arequipa is designed in blocks, just like Milton Keynes, but nicer. Every roadlooks the same. We walked and walked. We asked every taxi driver where the Hostel El Solares was, but nobody knew. We ended up back ...

... so, once again, scoff. I don't believe it. One of the easiest 6000+ meter peaks in the world, they said. This may very well be true, buts its all relative, let me tell you, because there is absolutely, definitely no such thing as an 'easy' 6000m peak. This climb was the culmination of almost exactly two months spent above sea-level in and around the Andean altiplano, from the north of Chile in San Pedro de Atacama, through Bolivia and into Peru, so we thought we were well ...
