5 star all the way!

My last entry from Africa! Sniff sniff! It is quite difficult to write the last entry after such a great trip but fortunately even my last week has been eventful! Last Thursday night Stu's Dad came home from work all pleased and with a surprise plan- Booked us all in a great hotel in Mombasa for 2 nights! So, Fri lunchtime (Stu's parents felt they deserved the early finish after a hard weeks work!) we drove to Mombasa and checked into the Tamarind Hotel. Owned by the same company as does the ...

An epic journey, efficiently executed

We loved Lamu, but decided that due to the Muslim lack of wine/ beer we would attempt to get to Diani in a day (near Tiwi). It was a bit like a Top Gear race, involving a fishing boat, a 50 seater plane, a taxi, an "express coach", another taxi, a ferry, and two Tuc tucs. Door to door in 6 hours- I doubt even Jeremy Clarkson could have beaten us!

... father) with them. My only response has been, "Not with you!" I'm actually surprised I haven't seen as much Obama influence here as I thought I would. Even in Ethiopia most towns had an Obama Restaurant or some kind of Obama shop. I remember an Obama Tire Shop in one town. But here all I've seen are Obama calendars and posters in shops. I hope you're doing well and I look forward to hearing from you. peace, Jen

... and see if I can make a profit, but the intial outgoing is less 400 pounds and I'm told by several established sources that I could get 1,000 for the bed. The worst case scenario is that I sell the bed to one of the hotels for 500 (which is very cheap for a luxury 6 foot four poster bed) and it hasn't cost me anything but a decent profit and great insight into watching a four cheetahs, lion heads and the rest of ...

... the basic living conditions and working in the slums. The smell of pee is not something i will miss, although i dont even smell the goat cafe anymore (local rubbish tip) . In months to come i'm sure i will be a distant memory for the children , but i will never forget them and the experience i have shared with them. In the poorest areas they always have a smile and they have an amazing way to recycle and be resourceful with whatever they ...

Mombasa, Diani Beach... attack of the jellyfish

... your somewhere... or just plain follow you. HM and I got quite rude by the end of it! After the monkey incident (oh... did I mention that they shat on heathers bath kit?.... They sure did), we thought perhaps we would look around for somewhere else to stay. A friend of HM's was also visiting in the area.... But she had gotten a deal at a sweet resort...s o she looked into getting us a deal. Did I also mention that one singular tree all on its own near our hut caught on ...

Farewell to Africa :(

Well, this is very sadly my last entry from Africa. in about 7 hours I will board a plane to Nairobi, and after a brief layover I am off to Dubai for the last 3 days of my journey. It has really been a whirlwind, and during breakfast this morning (of black tea, which I have taught myself to love) , i realised that it really does not feel like I have been gone for 2 whole months. I think that realisation will hit when I return to Halifax ...

The Bus to Mombassa

... and he was sweating profusely while studying his book and continuously fiddling with two mobile phones, sending SMS's and regularly swapping sim cards. I dozed off and woke from a nightmare in which I was Harrison Ford, saving the day. I had grabbed 'the terrorist's' phone and threw it out the window before he could hit the send button, which would have triggered the 'bomb'. I figured he had sat in front for easy access and wasn't prepared to ...

I'm having another vodka, care to join me?

... we were the most interesting thing that had happened in the village in years. All the locals came down with their families to sit on the platform and watch us sit on the train. Some passengers abandoned ship in favour of buses and taxis. Some Spanish passengers organised games for the local kids. There were no seats on direct buses from Mombassa to Dar es Salaam. We took a taxi to the ferry, the ferry, a matatu to the border, another matatu to Tanga in Tanzania, stayed ...
