Monday, August 24 - Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada
A pancake, bacon and scrambled egg breakfast was prepared for us this morning. Art joined the other early risers in the lodge while I relished a few more winks until I was served breakfast in bed.
Throughout our travels in the many gift shops that we've browsed, I've been admiring the beautiful walking sticks that many of them sell. Today, we get to make our own, instructed by "Dubie," a diamond willow ...
Sunday, August 23 - Destruction Bay, YT - Day 1 of 2
We awoke earlier than usual this morning - 6:15 - in order to be ready for breakfast in the campground dinette at 7:00 and to depart for Destruction Bay, YT by 9:00.
We were the first to arrive for breakfast and passed up the campsite's famous sourdough pancakes in favor of biscuits and gravy. The rest of the gang arrived shortly after we did, but we didn't ...
August 5, 2009 (Wednesday) – Tok, AK
Leaving Tolsona this morning, the smoke was so thick we had to use our headlights. Wendell put the air on re-circulate instead of vent because the smell was so strong it is irritating our noses. I checked the wildfires website yesterday and it appears to be the same fire – the Railbelt – southwest of Fairbanks. From that location, Tolsona is almost due south….about 150 miles ...
The first time we drove this, it was raining and you couldn't see much. Today was bright sunshine, and it was a beautiful drive.
Stopped at Tetlin Visitor Center; they told us where we might see trumpter swans. Saw them soon after passing the US border. Two swans were in a pond right next to the highway. It’s sure great to have a ...
This was an uneventful day with a lot of driving in wilderness conditions.
We crossed the continential divide. The rivers were flowing down the McKensie system into the Beaufort Sea. Now they go down the Yukon to the Bering Sea.
Enjoy the photos.
July 11, 2009 (Saturday) - Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada We had a nice little thunderstorm last night (Nitchie says there's nothing nice about any storm) and hoped to see clear skies this morning, but not so. It's still smoky out there. Driving from Whitehorse to Lake Kluane was a breeze compared to our trip in 2007. All that construction we went through back then appears to have held and other than a few bumps and dips, the road was fine. For anyone traveling this route ...
Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada dlpoolTraveled from Dawson Peaks Resort (east of Whitehorse) to Kluane National Park (west of Whitehorse). FYI, Whitehorse is the big city in the Yukon, and the territorial capital. I think the population is about 15,000. But they have both a Wal-Mart and a Starbucks!!!
No animals sighted today. Interesting that I've seen no major wild animals since I've been in the Yukon. Talked with another family last night, and they ...
Spent the night along a lake in a Yukon Park. There were signs warning of bear activity and warnings that tent campers should sleep in their vehicles. Some of the parks were actually closed down. Talked to a camper who had a grizzly in the campground ...
Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada goawaypolarbearI thought the road to Tok was bad, boy was I wrong heading for Destruction bay I would say 200 miles out of 244 miles were under construction. And the rain didn't help. The rain made the road nice and slippery. But we made it in about 9 hours of driving. The perma Frost really does a job ...
Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada rayandchristaI was contacted today by Expedia (the first time ever despite numerous previous requests over the past month) and was advised that a full credit for $4,904 would appear on my card within 7 days. Although I'm am pleased Expedia has admitted their mistake and look forward to receiving a refund, there is absolutely no justification for the incredibly poor service and snail-like response Expedia displayed in addressing my complaint.
