Arriving in Tel Aviv

Bob and I arrived safely in Tel Aviv yesterday. We flew separately on different airlines using frequent flier miles. He went from LAX to NY and then on to Tel Aviv on El Al which is the national airline of Israel. They supposedly have the best security in the world, for good reason. As he was waiting at the check in desk in NY, a man came up to him and interrogated him about why he was going, when he got his ticket, where he was staying. The man wrote everything down in a notebook and then st...

Jaffa and Tel Aviv

Today was a VERY busy day. Out of hotel by 8:30. First, we went to Jaffa which is only 10 minutes from Tel Aviv (TV) and is an ancient city dating back to biblical times. It is located on an elevated rocky peninsula jutting out into the sea and is the site of many biblical stories, where Jonah met his whale, St. Peter lived there for awhile, the Crusader Ric*************-hearted landed there and built a fortress, etc. Very reminiscent of the Greek islands with very narrow cobblestone streets ...

The ridiculously long flight home: retrospective

... what else is out there.
Especially factoring in the exchange rate our money buys far more within our own borders than it does anywhere else, but even so our standard of living is higher than anywhere else I saw. The USA pays less than half as much for gasoline as pretty much the entire rest of the world. This is the land of giant cars, timid drivers, and mediocre-to-nonexistent public transportation. This country is an exercise in contradictions and hypocrisy: we rely on social ...

... a few walls. When I arrived at my youth hostel, the lobby was crowded with yelling students, and four guys sat at the reception downing Gold Stars and talking about nightclubs, until the guy behind the desk asked them to shut up just long enough for him to tell me where the showers were. I wound my way up through a group of screaming Australian girls, teetering atop four inch heels and grooming themselves in front of the only full length mirror in ...

Day 28: Shalom and So Long

... look at the sea and boardwalk, the matkot games still in full swing below. Surfers were washing off under the public showerheads, and a squirming puppy was getting cleaned off, too.

After cleaning up, we headed on the spur of the moment to the gay community center in Gan Meir (Meir Park). (The cabbie misheard me, although he insisted he hadn't, and took us to Gan Ha-Ir (City Park) instead, prompting a whole re-negotiation of the cab ride and a stop at ...

More craziness of the occupation

... brother, sister. Every urge in my body would want to lash out. Think about the restraint these people show on a daily basis. I get ****** off when the cleaning ladies in my dorm hold the bathroom or kitchen hostage ... I can't even begin to imagine what this would be like.

So, next time you hear on the news that another suicide bomber struck, lets think about why. What happened to him/her to make them do this? The last thing I'm doing is condoning ...

... ready for passover. I think we are going to clean some more of the house because for passover you have to clean everything and get rid of all the crumbs from things. You have to clean the couches, floors, kitchen, bags, beds, EVERYTHING!! So we are taking it easy tonight. Tomorrow we are celebrating Ahuvah's birthday. We are going to a wine restaurant to have dinner then a few good glasses of Kosher wine. :) Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Allie

Have we really been gone a year?

... all for being part of our readership. We realize we often ran away at the keyboard with our emails and blog entries and we thank you for bearing with us (By the way, have another peek at it. We've added a few entries since our last email: www.travelpod.com/members/gilliguy). We tried to be as articulate and as poignant as we can and often it stood in our way, as most entries took forever to compose and although there are ...

A GOOD ENDING

It was mid-November when I received payment for the two weeks of landscaping/wood-gathering work I did. And I now had ten times as much money as I'd had upon arrival in Israel. I left pleasantly quiet Tzfat, a town I couldn't have standed to live in, because the religious girls there weren't fun. But, I still wasn't ready to go to my next, new country. Something about my time in Israel had been disappointing. Disheartening. I revisited Tel Aviv, and ...

... a quick bite before finding the Micra and pointing her toward Tel Aviv. The drive between the two cities was quite nice. It tales about an hour and can be completed on a small highway, much like PCH in California, that runs mostly along the very serene coastline that separates Haifa from greater Tel Aviv. After dropping off the car, Nina and I checked back into the Melody and made haste to the Neve Tzedek district so that we could catch a bit of shopping ...
