2 bus rides ~ 1 hour each with a 90min stopover at Nagano saw us arrive at Nozawa mid afternoon. This place is a total contrast to Hakuba. It is a small town built into a steep sided valley with lots of tiny winding streets and funny little shops and alleys. We are staying at a Ryokan - a traditional Japanese hotel, which is quaint and interesting. As you walk into reception you take shoes off and are issued with slippers for walking around. ...

With today's chicken meal, I just had the rice with miso soup, the salad and the pickles which was enough to sustain me for the rest of the ride.

Yesterday, I just hung around the hotel and the train station as I couldn't go too far with my aching knee. Both lunch and dinner were bento boxes purchased from the station supermarket. Lunch was 580 yen for a chicken bento box that was quite good and dinner was noodles and some veggies for 580 yen as well. That's a little over $6 each...cheap but good ...

Not only was it now my first night time drive in Japan but I was also raining and YES I had to go back the same mountainous winding road I came before, and the car is kinda light.
