... lookout at the top of the hill was stunning, especially with the sun out so bright. A forty-minute walk led us down to the Cathedral Cove beach. It reminded me of Thailand, with the sandy but green-topped cliffs and rocks out in the water eroded underneath. We explored a bit, then laid out in the sun, enjoying our first real taste of warm summer holiday.

... Kupe landed here in 950AD and left some of his family here where they populated the area. We could see Whitianga from Cook's Beach ferry landing, almost a stone's throw away, but the ferry only takes foot passengers, so we had to go the long way around.
