... After trying to find out how things might be cheaper, we concluded that the buffet option would be best. And that proved to be a good decision. After my first day in the office, its already time for a weekend... and more specifically, a long weekend. I could get used to this!
So, on my first day off, it only seemed appropriate to "discover the town" and do some shopping.
4 things I learned today:
a) when they do a raffle in Dubai, you don't win a VW ...
... only way to cross the creek. I figured that things would have changed by now.
So a late start, a taxi ride into old Dubai and then we wandered through the souks. First thing we heard when we got out of the cab was "copy watch, copy bag". Gosh how that took us back. We used to wander Asia and get this all the time, men trying to sell us reproduction watches and high end copied purses and bags. Hadn't heard it ...
... cafes and restaurants at the Dubai mall were expensive although the food hall was not too bad. We paid more for our gelati dessert there than we did for our dinner. The trains are good value. You get a gold day pass for about A$18 which allows you to sit in the front carriage and travel around as much as you like all day. The trains are very clean and come at intervals of about 5 to 7 minutes ...
... for 7 years.
We travelled inland from Dubai for about an hour before stopping a little chanty town, supposedly so they could adjust the air pressures before heading out into the desert. It was of course a great opportunity for us to buy some of the local product from their friends. We were all fitted out with the traditional headgear, supposedly to protect our faces from the sand!
When we finally turned off the bitumen and onto the red sand ...
