... the others had great views of Black Woodpecker. We went back to the hotel for breakfast, and as we were getting out of the car a Black woodpecker flew over! After breakfast we headed to Roy's village, about 5 miles from Eger. We walked through woods by the village wine cellars, mostly disused, but overnight rain made the track impassable. Back in the village we stopped by a tree for Syrian Woodpecker, and soon at least two turned up, another ...

The first siege is particularly noteworthy as 2-3,000 troops held off an army of 35-40,000 for 39 days, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers. They also lost about 1/3 of their own number. The second time around, the Ottomans came prepared for a long siege, eventually defeating the troops there. The weather the last few days, and today in particular, has been ...

[L]Feeling a little less than at peace with Slovakia we headed further south to the Hungry Border. Our first stop in Hungry was the home of the Lipanzer horses Szilvasvarad. Visited the local horse stud and watched the stupid foals playing. Nothing like the smell of stables to brighten the spirits. PS still raining heavily, add a bit of thunder and lightening ...

... finding our Airbnb. After some searching, we sent a message to Klara, our host, and she came right out to find us. She showed us the apartment speaking only Hungarian, no English. The place was so nice and so was she! We researched and located "The Valley of the Beautiful Women," a horseshoe-shaped cluster of wineries, on our phones, and decided to take the 20 minute walk there. The road ended and turned into a slender, rocky trail path, but we kept going until it ...
