Eger has turned out to be a little gem. Our apartment in the heart of the city centre by a stream was ideal. The only Turkish building left standing from the Turkish occupation, 1542 – 1697 is the minaret, so being up for a challenge we decided to climb to the top. The stairs were tiny but very high (shades of Winya Wanya in Peru) and the stairwell very narrow. Even he, who is fit, had sore ...

We have discovered that our trips onto small towns always seem more authentic than our trips to the big cities. [L]Feeling a little less than at peace with Slovakia we headed further south to the Hungry Border. Our first stop in Hungry was the home of the Lipanzer horses Szilvasvarad. Visited the local horse stud and watched the stupid foals playing. Nothing like the smell of stables to brighten the spirits. PS still raining heavily, add a bit of thunder and lightening ...

Thank you Slovakia for the jagged mountains, friendly folk and bowls of hearty goulash, 'dakujem'. Passing the once communist outpost, we climb the barb wire fence as bullets flying past our heads, and we burst into Hungary! Farmland as far as the eye can see, we zoom along the highway toward Budapest, our first destination Eger. Storms along the horizon, the humidity level rises. The trickles of raindrops ...

As Keith mentioned yesterday, I had coffee this morning with Elza Kovacs, the woman from Debrecen, in eastern Hungary who visited me in West Lafayette for one month last summer. It was great to have a friend to meet and something to do on my own. Even better because I convinced Keith to take the boys and brave the weekly grocery shopping without me. We met at a local cafe, and Elza introduced me to the world of Hungarian cakes - apparently these ...
