"From 1975 to 1979 - through execution, starvation, disease and forced labour - the Khmer Rouge systematically killed an estimated two million Cambodians, almost a fourth of the country's population." Author's Note to "First They Killed My Father" by Luong Ung which is a very interesting book. FIRST THAILAND Kanchana, Vava and I had been out shopping and on the way back to the apartment I dropped them off at Kanchana's office as she wanted to do some work, and I parked the car at the apartmen...
Siam Reap, Cambodia paulKanchana and Mark and I went to Cambodia. It has been a while now and so I have already forgotten. We flew to Cambodia (which is too expensive considering the length of the flight) and went and saw Angkor Wat - just for a day. We all enjoyed it. I like Cambodia and would like to see more of it, although I think Siem Reap is not at all representative of the rest of Cambodia. Anyway - I can't remember the rest now - so I will just add pictures and let you see for yourself. Oh - I found my notes...
Siem Reap, Cambodia paulAfter a 3 day tour in the Mekong Delta we took a boat to the border of Cambodia. The tour coordinator did all the immigration work and it was a smooth entry. When we got off the boat we took a van to the capitol Phnom Penh. Vietnamese had told us that Cambodia was a sorry little country that always needed Vietnams help and that it was very poor, but on first impression Phnom Penh looked more like an American city than any other city we’ve been to so far. One of the first things I notice...
Siem Reap, Cambodia sales_family... to go for one as we felt three days would be to many and we would be templed out after one day. There are so many temples to visit in one day, we just picked the main ones to see, which was more than enough.
There is not much point going into to much detail about the temples as the information on sites are very little, so it is best to get a detailed book about Angkor Temples for more informative information. All of the temples are dated ...
... smiles to the 216 stone smiles on the towers.
Next Sreang took us to a monument that was a reclining Buddha under construction. We both thought this was not much to see as it was very difficult to see the features of the Buddha, even with a description and diagram to assist. We made short visits to some other temples, including Angkor Gate, Elephants Terrace, and Angkor Thom. By now we were worn out on temples and Sreang recommended a Cambodian ...
... towards Eden but only made it as far as Batman's bay- a lovely little beach town where we just so happened to see a pod of dolphins swimming around the bay!! It was so cool! The beach was like something off Home and Away and completely empty...mind you it was quite cold! We camped almost for the whole week here and in Wollongong ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia sheilajortw... there was more than enough witnesses for the cops so we just strolled on. The popular theory among the bystanders was that the driver must of been drunk and drove off in a panic? Before this had even happened we both noticed that speeding around the busy city centre seems to be the norm in Sydney, makes road safety in Dublin look outstanding! After all the excitement we continued on to the observatory where we had a look around for a few hours. We also took ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia alandrach... Thursday I went to the Royal Botanical Gardens and went on a guided tour, layed out in the grass overlooking the harbour and then went around the ritzy shops I couldn't afford...haha. Friday I went down to Coogee Beach and did a coast walk (about 5k) up the coast to Bondi Beach. It was a gorgeous walk that went through little beaches, a crazy cool cemetary and some amazinggggg views of the ocean. Saturday I got up early and met up with Naz, this girl I ...
Sydney, Australia hillaries14... The four of us chilled out on Bondi Beach, went for a swim (where Esther nervously kept cautioning me not to get to far offshore because of the nasty rip currents in Australian waters) and checked out the Bondi area (and local hostels for the following couple of nights as we wanted to give Brad and Esther some space at their home). Brad met us up, we enjoyed a great middle eastern meal at a local spot called Sabbabba and ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia chiapoe... walked over to the mall really quick to grab some
more groceries and mini pies for desert, then headed in for the night
to make a pasta dinner. Amazingly, as we sat down to eat, Lu turned on
the music channel and of course Men At Work's, "We Come From a Land
Down Under" came on... perfect.
