Hot and steamy

You might think that arriving at Singapore at 5 o'clock in the morning would allow you to miss out on the oppressive heat and humidity. You might think that, but you'd be wrong. Twenty-six degrees and about 99% humidity greeted us as we walked clear of Changi airport. It was wonderful to see the shiny city of Singapore waking up as we headed to our hotel. The roads were clear and we could see itinerant workers loaded into the backs of trucks being taken off to their workplace for the day. Fat...

The Singapore Zoo... at last

Ever since we have been coming to Singapore I have had a visit to the zoo on the agenda. This time we made it. The day started in a promising way, with our favourite buffet breakfast. It has become something of a family tradition when visiting Singapore to stay at the Swissotel Merchant Court and gorge ourselves on the buffet. This time was no exception. We noted that the hotel was offering a high tea for only $10 in the afternoon so we booked in for that too, figuring we could forgo lunch an...

The lost day

Travelling back to Asia from Europe inevitably causes you to lose a whole day. The flight for us from Barcelona was 13 hours and there is a 7 hour time difference so 'poof' a whole day goes by without you getting to do very much. We checked out of our hotel in Barcelona, the Tryp, pretty early. Maggie had slept soundly during the night and as a result we were all set to go. Our flight took us from Barcelona to Milan and then on to Singapore. It was great being back on Singapore Airlines. It r...

Hughie set the alarm on his mobile to get us up at 5am to leave for the airport at 6. However he hadn't changed the clock from Melbourne time, so he was showered before he realised he was up an hour too early. Anyway, wakened now, we all got up and watched the sunrise from the balcony.

After breakfast and sad farewells to Doreen at the airport, we had a 7 hour flight to Singapore. Last time we’d been at Changi airport, on the way out, we had been transit passengers, not leaving ...

Busy day in Singapore

Breakfast wasn't included in our hotel package, so by 8am we were ready to set out. The mall didn’t open till 10am and, trying to avoid O’Briens and Starbucks if possible, we found a breakfast shop favoured by the local office workers en route to work. There we had "Chezy" Toast with Kaya and 2 sloppy poached eggs in a bowl. We must have looked like ignorant tourists eating our eggs with a teaspoon, because we later saw the locals whisking soy sauce into theirs and dipping the toa...

Singapore is amazing!

Our only morning in KL leaves something to be desired... I have a fiasco at Citibank trying to get out cash and then get separated from Lauren and Adi before having to leave to the airport all sorts of early as it is 70 km away from the city center. Citibank makes me take out Ringett (paying a conversion rate at the ATM) and then convert that money back into dollars. Needless to say, I sound off at the branch manager and the bankers back home are lucky that the time difference prohibited me f...

Asia 2009 Part 1

Tuesday 3-3 Lansing-Minneapolis Sandy was once again a real trooper and got me to the airport by 5:45 am for my flight to Minneapolis. The reason for the trip was to burn Northwest frequent flier miles prior to a major devaluation due to the merger with Delta Airlines. I figured if I was going to spend the miles I might as well stay for a while as it is a major trip to get to Asia. I had originally booked a Business Class seat from Minneapolis to Hong Kong, as that is all I could get for the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Swissotel Merchant Court Singapore

Great Hotel, Great Location.

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had planned a stopover in singapore for 3 days using SIA's singapore stopover holiday package. Reached the hotel at 3 in the night, but the belldesk person was very friendly and took all our heavy luggage to the

reception desk.

The reception staff was very friendly. The room was excellent. It was exactly how they show in their virtual tour. The room was well arranged and the bathroom was excellent full of ammenities. The only thing i didn't like was the rather old water heater for making coffee. It had instructions only in japanese. But I guess its just a matter of minutes before you can figure it out.

The view was not that great as it faced a street. Also there was construction going on for building some mall. So quite noisy in the daytime. But I was out the whole day so it didn't bother me.

The hotel is next to Clarke Quay and the swimming pool is very good. The Blue Potato restaurant by the pool had good food and good people (like Andy).

The hotel has the Amrita Spa facility, high speed internet available(quite pricey), very good room service for food(not at all expensive).

In short, a very pleasant stay. Totally recommended!!!!!!

Great Family Hotel !!

from TSF
Great family hotel.

First took the family in Nov 03, again in Mar 04 and will be there Feb 05. The room are clean and spacious enough for 2 adults and 2 kids.

The service and staff were greatly and friendly, the food was excellent. The MTR is close by (wasn't finished when last there).

Clarke key shops, food courts, restaurants and bars are just across the river.

Excellent hotel and fully recommend it to anyone staying in Singapore.

First visit in Sinapore stayed at the Marina Mandarin and 5 visists since we haev stayed at the Merchant Court.

Merchant Court - BEST hotel in Singapore

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is without exception a top class hotel and THE place to stay in Singapore. It is beautifully laid out and the swimming pool is an oasis of colour and relaxation. The whole place is most tastefully decorated and is a haven from the heat outside. It overlooks the Singapore River and Colliers Quay. A stroll across the bridge takes to you to bars, shops, restaurants and the famous Satay Club. This trip to Singapore was a surprise for a 'landmark' Birthday and we stayed on the Executive Club floor. The Merchant Court has the BEST Club Lounge ever. The staff are fantastic and the amenities incredible. A knock at the door on our second evening brought a beautiful Birthday Cake and Card from the Management. It was a really nice touch. I can recommend this Hotel to any would-be visitor to Singapore and will not even consider staying at any other Hotel again.

Average room , very noisy

from pointtravel
Stayed here in December 2004. The lobby is not that big. The carpet in the room is disappointingly worn out. The room has LOTS of street noise. NOT a 4 star hotel.

the staff are friendly. Breakfast is a zoo, but decent.

LOCATION is GREAT. next to Clark Quay. Overall, would not stay there again due to noise and the worn out room.

Outdated rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed for three nights in October 2004.The rooms reminded me of an old Holiday Inn.

It looked like the owners renovated the outside recently for a more modern look. The exercise room and pool appear to be recently updated also. The new windows in our room on the executive floor were poorly installed with gaps around three sides.

The location is great for tourists. Close to many restaurants and taverns. 15 minute walk to Chinatown. Only half a block to the subway.

Everything considered I would try a different hotel if I was ever in Singapore again.

Food remains & dubious stains- not quite luxury

from owlAnon
Booked this hotel online as part of our return 2 night stopover from New Zealand. Rather fancied a bit of luxury after touring in a camper for two weeks. Arrived at check-in, jetlagged, only to be told that the king size, non-smoking room I'd definitely booked was not available and that we'd have to have a twin/smoking room! Felt instantly stressed (I'm asthmatic) and the guy at reception said he would upgrade us. After breathing a sigh of relief made our way to the room.

Room had no balcony, rather worn carpet and nice-ish but rather worn chaise longue. Piece of carrot (room service remains?) under the chaise and dubious stains on the bedside table (red wine?) and on the bedspread (yellow- didn't want to think about it too much). We contacted housekeeping and they cleaned the room whilst we were in it. Began to think the 'upgrade' was a bit of light humour. Bathroom was nice and toiletries were adequate enough, if small. T.V was fine, although the remote control lost battery power the next day.

Breakfast at the hotel was excellent and restaurant staff were extremely friendly and helpful, as was the chap on the door. Pool was very good, although not quite as nice as the hotel pool on our outward journey (in a cheaper hotel).

Location was excellent (right in the heart of Clarke Quay). Upon checking out I quickly worked out that we'd been charged for the minibar (which we had not used- and the bill was not very clear at all). The mistake was corrected after I pointed out the error. Reception staff didn't seem as friendly/helpful as other staff.

Overall the place was fine, but would consider staying elsewhere on a future visit.

Fantastic Hotel - very impressed

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here in October and it was fabulous. Being quite a particular person i was really impressed with the level of service and the cleanliness of this hotel. (4- 5 star service at a 3 star price) I never really had to ask for anything as they always preempted my every need. Grace on concierge was most helpful and accomodating at all times. We stayed twice during the month and on the second visit were fortunate enough to get upgraded to a room with balcony and also given late checkout. (which was 6pm i might add!!!).

Is on the MRT line but not far too walk to Raffles City and Chijmes (the bars and restaurants). I would have no hesitation in staying there again. In fact i am planning to make a trip back next year too. Highly recommended.

Paradise

What a brilliant place, central location to Boat Quay and the many food places. Even though the hotel was undergoing some renovations, the staff were all friendly and we loved the relocation for breakfast, by the pool and overlooking some of the harbour!

The pina colada's are good value too!

Location, Value, Luxury and Great Service.

from Longdrive
We stayed two nights in August 2004 as a stop over on our way to Europe but could have stayed longer. It is idealy located at Clarke Quay and nearby Harbour Quay which has a great selection of restaurants. A new MRT station has just opened on its doorstep from which you can travel to anywhere in Singapore, Orchard Road shopping in less than 5 min.

We considered that the Hotel was good value, would recommend you go for a room on the Club Floor which provides a quality room that includes a great buffet breakfast and evening drinks which gives you an opportunity to meet other guests.

The hotel staff were excellent and they go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The swimming pool area was excellent to cool down in after a hard and hot day shopping. This was our first experience with the Swissotel Group and we would definitely stay again.

Excellent oasis

from A TripAdvisor Member
A good example of 5-star service and cleanliness. Rooms are bright, well decorated and clean. Pool is a wonderful botanical setting with water slides for the kids and pool-side cabana bar for the adults. The staff (thanks to Eddie on Business Level!) does a superb job at meeting guests every need. Breakfast, unlimited cocktails and 2 pieces of laundry included make this a great deal. The subway is right near the hotel - 2 stops from the bustle of Orchad stree stopping.
