I love the Petronas Towers

Day 125 - Yesterday I reached breaking point with budget accommodation and by 7:30 I was out of that s**thole, shouting at Gobi to shut up and give me back my 5RM deposit as he tried to convince me to stay and power walking my way towards Swiss Inn. At 150RM a night, it is excessive, but necessary - and thank goodness they had a spare room... but not until the afternoon. I dumped my bag and feeling happier already, went for breakfast. I stopped at a street stall and had char kway teow, which ...

Flying from Auckland to Malaysia

Been on a cramped plane for 10 hours is not really my idea of fun but the destination it is heading too is alway worth it (unless the destination is going home). Having a display at the front of the plane showing the progress of the trip in distance didn't make it any faster. The trip was not too bad towards the end when the two UK travelers sitting next to us offered us a Bourbon which turned into 8 bourbons. Unfortunately the girl (from the UK) passed out in her seat and I had to wake her u...

Kuala Lumpur has the best Satay

We had the best Bus ride to Kuala Lumpur on a double decker business class bus. We sat in the two front seats and the most amazing view. The trip took about 5 1/2 hours and the bus even had movies which we were too busy enjoying the view to even watch. They even served us lunch, some delicious tandoori chicken with some dried fish heads with peanuts on the side. Loved the chicken. Kuala Lumpur reminds me of a combination of Khao San Road in Bangkok and a little bit of Cambodia. We are staying...

Where is Bus 11???

For all of you who know me, I love to do it local. Eat with the locals, and stay by the locals, and definitely take the public transportation with the locals. But the funny thing about doing it in a foreign country, is that you can ask the same question in how to get somewhere, and whats the best way 10 times and get 12 different answers. But we were determined today to get to the Batu Caves outside of KL...( thats what they call Kuala Lumpur, but Maureen and I like the way it sounds so thats...

Monkeys, snakes & tickly fish in Malaysia!

Hi everybody!

We are in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia at the mo! We had a tough aul time getting here... we thought it would only take a couple of hours to get here from Pattaya but it ended up taking 12 hours! We were pretty knackered on our first nite here so we didnt do much.

Yesterday we went to see the Patronas Towers (they used to be the biggest buildings in the world) which was good, except we weren't able to go up to the Sky Bridge walkway that connects the 2 towers, as there...

A New Chapter

Cities and their airports around the world could learn a few lessons from Kuala Lumpur. As soon as we deplaned in this city we found a bathroon. Excellent. And then a computer with free Internet access. Then a huge shopping arcade... with a bookstore... with guidebooks! All this before picking up our checked luggage and going through Customs. We have never had such luxuries at any other airport. After all this, we took a high speed train into the city linked to the rest of K.L.'s transportati...

Thursday 5 July 2001 - Penang to Kuala Lumpur Slept well. Had a great walk around Chinatown and revisited several sights from yesterday, including the Hainan Temple and Khoo Kongsi, a clan house that is part temple and part meeting house where I was shown around by an aged caretaker. I took his photo and asked if he'd like me to send him a copy, but he said he already had dozens that others had sent. I had a lime juice in a café before heading to the bus. Whilst sitting there, the family I'd ...

Sunday 8 July 2001 Kuala Lumpur - Overnight Express Train to Hat Yai Discovered that my sandals were about to crack through the soles so I spent the morning in the malls of Bukit Bintang searching for a new pair. Had earlier negotiated a late, 3.00pm checkout at the Swiss Inn hotel - the staff there have been really helpful. I also left my unposted postcards with them to post on Monday. Walked over to the Islamic Arts Museum near the old KL main railway station and the National Mosque. It's h...

White water rafting and hiking!

Day 10... maybe.. Ok, I was looking forward to coming to Kuala Lumpur almost as much as seeing the Soldiers in Xi'an. Since we got in late around 2am we took a little nap cause we had to be ready for our tour guide to pick us up at 7am. Our day was to be filled with white-water rafting and then jungle trekking. Mr. Chow was our driver to the location. He spoke no English and played this mix cd of American music over and over and over again there and back! I think I have had my fill of Celine ...

Great decoration but no view

from Nion
One night at Swiss Inn-China Town made me upset due to there was no windows at the standard room. Moreover, the room size is very small and it is difficult to go to the the guest room.

Good point is the decoration is great and the location is great also because you can shop at the Petalling street until you drop and go up to your room.

It look clean but my mom was hurt by unknown insect and we worried about the air circulation in the no-window room. So, next time we will consider other hotel

Loved it for everything

from sybones
I booked a room for 3 through a website - it was fuss-free and efficient.

I did not bother about noting down location of the place (only remembered 'chinatown') because it was going to be our 2nd night there. Thinking back, it's quite silly, but fortunately i spotted it on the way to Chinatown for our breakfast the day we touched down. It has 2 entrances and was hard to miss as long as u open your eyes to walk on Chinatown (a.k.a. Chee Chiong Kai in Cantonese, and Petaling Street is the real name)

Was panicking on the night before (in another hotel) whether if they could let us leave our bags there (before check-in time) as we wanted to go to Sunway to play. Managed to find their number though the receptionist. Reply from Swiss Inn was prompt and helpful. My anxiety was not needed.

So as planned, we reached about 10am there. Left our bags with the friendly porter for a small service charge/tips (RM1/bag) which we gladly paid.

Arrived at Swiss Inn at about 8pm. Wow the room left such a good impression of us. We did not expect much of it, though I'm sure I couldn't have made a bad choice from reading reviews here. But the room was fairly spacious, nicely equipped (TV, hairdryer, coffee/tea + cups + hot water kettle, complimentary mini soap bar + mini bottle of shampoo). Most importantly, the room was clean, and the bed+sheets+pillows were clean and comfortable!! :) We had a room facing the KL tower, which looked quite scenic in the night.

Woke up for breakfast the next morning - yummy! A good range of choices in the buffet-styled breakfast, enough to satisfy anyone's palate (don't be too choosy - it's good enough).

They also have an internet station (with 2 computers) near the cafe.

Things got a bit complicated when we wanted to check out as there were a large crowd of tourists trying to check-in. Heard that they were fully-booked for the nights that week! Yup it's that good :)

Overall, friendly staff, clean rooms, and good breakfast :D From the best 3-star hotel in Malaysia :D

Positive opinion

from criby
We stayed here for 3 nights and we definitely liked it. The hotel is very clean and rooms are small but very comfortable, althought the walls are not so thick so you might hear your neighbour speaking. Anyway, the hotel is usually quiet in the night.

Breakfast is ok, there is a good variety of things to eat.

The staff at the reception is very friendly, we booked a tour to Melaka through this hotel and the receptionist also helped us with booking a hotel in Melaka which was not included in the tour. Furthermore, he helped us with indications in Kula Lumpur.

The position of the hotel is perfect because it's located in the centre of Chinatown, so you can just go directly to the stalls of the market from a secondary entry of the hotel. We absolutely suggest to stay here, it's a good point of departure to visit Kuala Lumpur.

Great location!

from Pretre
Stayed here for 3 nights. Room clean & comfortable (bathroom could have been larger) with comfy bed & cleaned every day. Breakfast okay - buffet style with Western & Asian food.

Great location - Chinatown right outside the 'front' door, Petaling Street market outside the 'back' door (full of pirated DVD's, CD's, watches & trainers), bus station 5 (very hot!) minutes walk away (call a cab if you have bags - costs about 20p & you'll save about a gallon of sweat & possible sunstroke!).

Enjoy.

It was clean and cheap!

from Babycainsmith
Great location... The night market is right through the back door, the bus station is a 5 minute walk and there's lots of good restaurants around. The rooms were basic but clean. The breakfast was huge!

Loved the convenient & busy Chinatown location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I thought this place was great and would not hesitate to stay there again.

The back entrance drops you right in the middle of a busy night market, where there is all sorts of interesting stuff to buy. (Mostly pirated watches, DVDs, handbags, etc).

Also, very close to a very useful subway line; maybe a 5-minute walk.

Perfect for someone looking to do some sightseeing and bargain shopping.

If you are looking for a romantic setting, this is probably not a good choice.

The room itself was fine; relatively basic, but clean and comfortable etc.

Don't do it!

Okay this hotel is a dump. we asked for a non smoking room and got smoking. when we changed our room to non-smoking it was worse. It smelled of smoke, mold and insect spray. The rooms are full of mold, dust and the building is a complete fire hazard.. I would not want to get stuck in the hotel with a fire. The staff was nice. We left in the middle of the night for a better hotel. I wish I was warned before I booked. Everyone in our group gave it a zero.

Excellent location and good value for money

from A TripAdvisor Member
In the middle of China Town the hotel is has a great location. Staff is friendly, helpful and service minded.

A decent breakfast buffet is served and everything but the coffee was tasty.

The room was clean and the total experience was positive.

It's no luxury but good value for money.

Quaint hotel in busy location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had stayed at the Swiss Inn in Chinatown for 5 days and found it to be pleasant. I was travelling alone and the Malaysian travel agent recommended to stay somewhere busy so I can go out at nights and not have to worry about coming back to the hotel. The hotel is located right on Petaling Street...the hotel has two entrances, one that leads into the night street market from the hotel restaurant...with shopping and food. The other entrance leads to stores and restaurants of Chinatown. Very near the Putra light rail on the Pasar Seni stop and also near the Central Market...just walks away.

The room was decent size, with full size bed and standing bathroom (no tub). It was clean and quiet, except the walls are paper thin so I heard my neighbors talking during the late nights. I was facing South overlooking distant hotels. I did see construction right out my window because l think a building is going up soon...of course it didn't block my view...as of yet. Great service and friendly staff. OH, I highly recommend getting the breakfast buffet with your stay.....it consists of Malaysian and Western style food. I enjoyed every morning eating the Malaysian style....consist of sweet, coconut curry chicken, coconut/sticky rice, noodles or fried rice, spring rolls, congee, spicy laksa, etc....foods alternate on days. It was so delicious and cheap!
