I reckon I must be a sucker for upsell. Today is the start of our adventure tour to
Vancouver Island so this morning we pull into the local Hertz agency to pick up
our rental car for today and tomorrow.
Nice young man in charge - "the
car you ordered is pretty …
So, on Friday morning, we packed up our gear, and headed back to Victoria. It was going to be a long drive (at least 5 hours), but we had planned to stop for lunch a few hours in. Sam was keen to drop the car back that evening so that we could have a leisurely morning on Saturday before our flight back to Vancouver so we knew time was tight.
... and had a nice meal and then off to bed as we had to pack up and head out in the morning for the ferry on the bus.
The day again turned out foggy and as we waited for the bus more people showed up that had tried to get a flight out by both sea plane and airplane but due to the fog both were cancelled, we boarded the bus and left on time again we were first on the ferry which meant we would be first off, we went up to the cafe and had a lovely breakfast and then out ...
... the top due to the tall trees. The area is very damp and many trees seem to be "fuzzy" with moss. The moss is so thick it actually causes their branches to be weighed down making the trees seem to have eerie spider legs.
We decide at this point to head straight for the ferry and hope to arrive ...
... s 4 floors. Beautifully furnished with original decor. Caught bus back to Empress Hotel. Cheryl and I went to museum while Ross and Peter went to Fish's Wharf and a beer in Bengor Lounge. We joined them at Fairmont for High Tea; blueberries and cream, champagne, tea, sandwiches, scones and cakes. Provided gluten free selection for me! A walk home to pack ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Swans Suite Hotel - Victoria's Boutique Art Hotel
Can't Wait to Return
My husband and I spent one night in The Swans over Easter week-end and what an absolutely fantastic experience it was! Everything from the initial inquiry in person, to the reservation process, through check-in, dinner in the pub, dancing in the bar and breakfast in the restaurant, was a complete joy. The staff are without exception helpful and friendly.
Our room was so wonderful - beautifully furnished, decorated and equipped, what a pleasure to open the door on such a great space.
Food and drink were extremely reasonably priced and great value for money.
We own two small vacation rental properties up-Island (Vancouver Island) and we will not hesitate to recommend The Swans to our guests and our friends who visit from the UK and back East.
Good place for families
We stayed at Swan's in July 2004 and had a very nice experience.
The suite was huge. It felt like a nice one-bedroom apartment. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the pots, pans and dishes we needed to make our breakfast. The hotel was at the edge of the historic downtown area, so we could walk everywhere.
Nothing was really outstanding, but we did not need that. We found a pleasant, clean, confortable place to stay, and that was what we wanted.
The front desk recommended the Pericles restaurant, a greek place about two blocks away. It was better than every other place we tried from the guide books.
I know how helpful these comments are in making a decision, so I'm taking the time to add my experience to the mix. We thought the two-bedroom suite was "fine". It's like a dated apartment. It was spacious which counts for a lot when you have three children. The staff was nice and professional and helped us make whale watching reservations with Seafun Safaris which turned out great. On the negative side, it had an old musty smell in the kitchen area, but we didn't end up cooking so it wasn't really a problem. the sofabed was really gross and smelly so that would have to be our biggest complaint. It is near a homeless shelter. There are signs posted in the bathroom not to use too much hot water or you will have to wait 15 min before it can replenish. All in all, though, it was a good experience and we left happy. P.S. breakfast at Vista 18 (request a view table) was great!
Swans is a fun place to stay ... clean rooms, charming decor, great service and tasty grub! Hmmm, did I mention the beer! While it offers a terrific location near Johnson Bridge and within spitting distance of the Inner-Harbour, it is also sited across the road from the Salvation Army. But fear not, no-one staying at the hostel troubled us during our stay and the hostels guests appeared polite - it appeared they were simply ordinary people who were just down on their luck. Swans prides itself on comfortable rooms and excellent customer service ... friendly, efficient and genuinely relaxed Canadian - not the pseudo-English hype offered at some over-rated and over-priced B&Bs in Victoria. The hotel puts other local lodgings to shame with its lack of pretentiousness and outstanding value for money.
Many Happy Returns
Our first visit to Swan's was reviewed here on 11 April 2002. We loved the place and were really disappointed to read the negative review that came after. However, we trusted our own judgement and went back in May this year and are really glad we did. It is still a super place to stay and we had a lovely 3 days there. Please give it a try if you visit Victoria and like something a bit more unusual than the standard hotel.
We stayed at the Swans for a week in February and absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and eager to help. The room was very spacious, on two levels, with a large living area downstairs with a big TV. The sleeping area was upstairs also with another tv. Every wall had a piece of original art which made for a very pleasant atmosphere, with a few pieces of interesting furnishings. Otherwise the decoration was very subdued, with white walls and plain carpet and furniture. There were large windows with a view to the harbour, with plenty of natural light including a sky light. The room was pleasant enough to spend time in, which we did at some point. All was very clean which is the most important. Also we had free internet access in the room. The bistro served excelent formal dinner, with a great atmosphere and service. The food was divine. The pub also had food, more relaxed but not as good... pub food i suppose. The high point of teh pub is the live music (which we did not hear from the room) and good ale. The location of the hotel was very handy to explore downtown. We had a very pleasant stay and would recommend it to others. B&T.
Don't even look at staying anywhere else.
My wife and I had arrived in Victoria the day before and after looking around for accomodation checked in to another hotel that was slightly cheaper than the Swans. We ate in the Swans restaurant that evening and I had asked about accomodation for the next night. Some was available and they even gave a discount when I asked. What can I say...the place is marvellous. We had a 1 bed suite, with a view out onto the harbour.
Lovely spacious suite, on two storeys, we couldn't believe how good it was and couldn't believe we hadn't just gone there straight away. It looked expensive before we arrived, but I think is very competitively priced for Victoria and far the best place to stay. Don't even look anywhere else, just book it.
Swooned for the Swan
My husband and I, with another couple, picked the Swans Suite Hotel and Public House to stay at this summer. While he and I had been up there numerous times, it was our friend's first time, so we wanted to find a fun, special hotel to stay in - and did we find it! The Swans was wonderful, the staff were personable, helpful and well-trained. Our room was freshly remodeled and everything was clean and in order. The restaurant and bar were delightful, food, drink and service excellent.
All in all I would rate it as one of the most pleasant places to stay.
The staff at the Swans were friendly but the rooms left a lot to be desired. The pullout bed/couch was very thin and the third person travelling with us ended up sleeping on the floor (which was better than the pullout couch). Once we realized the bed would not work we asked to be moved to another room (none was available) and then we asked if we could just leave and check into another hotel. We were informed that they would charge our credit card anyway even though we had only been checked in for a few hours! So we were forced to stay one night in the hotel. The attached brewpub had a nice atmosphere but lousy beer and there a lot of bums hanging around the hotel -- the website does not mention that the property is located close to a homeless shelter. Overall, a very unsatifying experience.
We recently stayed in Victoria and on the strength of the reviews on this site, stayed at Swan's. We could only get a studio because the one bed suites were fully booked, but there was plenty of space for 2 adults and a 12 year old. The place is in a great location, near shops, restaurants and places of interest. The staff are helpful and friendly and the food and beer are brilliant value for money. We will definitely stay there next time.
