However, the routes up and down are often windy and usually quite steep. Coming back down we encountered problems with the gears not engaging properly and smelling of clutch plate burning. Quite scary.

... Melbourne airport it took four and a half hours to arrive at Christchurch. To make time go abit faster on the plane I read up on New Zealand’s culture and how they do things differently over there. My Highlights for this trip would have to be the To Sua Ocean Trench and snorkelling at the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve. It was a visually rewarding experience and showed of the natural beauty of this world.

I found a very nice looking Majestic Knight Series 3 family van complete with triple bunks, separate shower, toilet and a full size fridge. This would suit a long trip perfectly, and had even done a lap with another family prior, showing its abilities. A fair bit of negotiation over a few weeks eventually saw this van in my driveway, even though no other steps had been taken to undertake such a trip.
