Trieste - Croassroad of Italian, Slavic & Germanic

... That’s the part of the city that
dates to the era of Habsburg control and resembles Vienna in the size and
    grandeur of its public buildings.

Despite its lack of major sights, I really liked Trieste
because there were so few foreign tourists there. Even though the Barcolana
attracted a big crowd, the people there were almost all Italian. That also
means reasonable prices and better food in restaurants. Many people rave about
    the ...

... of what was that country!

Postojna is one of two major cavern systems in the so-called
Karst Region of southwestern Slovenia. That refers to the limestone rock under
the surface that is very favorable to the formation of caverns. Postojna is
still the biggest crowd pleaser, apparently now from what I read with a train
on a track to take the tourist hordes through the cavern. That didn’t exist
back in 1985, though. We walked on a tour, and ...

... had to resist the temptation since I’d be driving all afternoon. After filling up on free samples, though, I decided to buy a portion of the cooking demonstration’s creation of gnocchi in boletus mushroom sauce. It was fantastic and far better in both flavor and value than my restaurant truffle dishes the night before.

I spent the rest of the afternoon driving up and down through the hills to some of the other towns and villages in the area, ...

    Piran - Slovenian Istria

Slovenia has only 16 miles of coastline, not much compared to Croatia's thousands of miles of coast when you include all of its islands and peninsulas. The short stretch is quite developed with an industrial port city (Koper), a swank resort (Portoroz), and a few other old towns. The one real attraction, though, is Piran, a beautiful old town on a peninsula similar to Porec and Rovinj in Croatian Istria but ...

... the B & B is within five minutes of the bridge. This will be a nice change of pace for as we depend on trains and cabs from here on. Some final thoughts on our road trip to Slovenia, Bosnia and Croatia. The people have been so friendly and outgoing toward us. They are building their economy around tourism and I think it is working for them. The food has been fabulous for ...
