Yellow paint and oysters
In Australia, wherever you go, you will find that every step, or slight incline, is highlighted in bright yellow paint, in case you haven't seen it and trip. Stairwells are brightly lit, and one is aware they have thought of every conceivable problem and tried to fix it. Health and safety rules.
Here, the hotel corridors are in semi darkness even in the middle of the day; not only is there no yellow paint on the stairs, but the stairwells themselves ...
Smoke and mirrors
... themselves from the many layers of clothing they had on. They still set the beeper off, and had to be taken one by one into the very smart and new fangled body scanner, before being let through and allowed to re-dress.
From there, they queued to collect their hand luggage which had gone through the scanner and been "set aside" for further procedures.
