Spending my 3rd winter in Japan, I decided it was about time to cave in and go to Hokkaido's famous "yuki matsuri" (snow festival.) I've always declined offers to go to Hokkaido, because it's Japan's northern most island and is known for snow, cold, green pastures, beer making, and dairy farming.... sound familiar? Coming from the Midwest, there just wasn't a big draw for me to go to Hokkaido. If I wanted to see that sort of thing, I'd just as well go home to WI. BUT Hokkaido does have one t...
Sapporo, Japan brianneinjapan... and headed out the backside of the mall to discover a jazz festival! Though the singer we heard was pretty good, the set in itself was a little bland and we lost interest.
Though we had hoped to go the zoo, we missed the last bus out there, so we headed back to the hotel in defeat. After a few hours recharching and napping, we decided to strike out and the beer festival we had heard so much about. We found it ...
... mieru (you can see sunset)" restaurant.
Oh, YUMMY!
This park also has this crazy fountain... the water goes up as high as 25 meters.
I could learn a bit about Isamu Noguchi today.
His father was a Japanese guy, and his mother was an American teacher.
Once his father knew his mother was pregnant, he went back to Japan.
Isamu was raised by his mother mostly in Japan, and ...
... feeling like this ritual is like a beautiful art with a full of everyone's wishes, hopes and appreciation. This is how they have done it for a long time. I, as an outsider, just come in and see this ritual, and I scream "this is cruel!". I think that's not right. I mean, Ainu people have appreciated the existence of bears because bears bring them food, fur to protect from cold weather, and medicine. To appreciate what they can have for their living, they celebrate ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan beachmonkie... the crab is king in this part of the world!). The people are much friendlier than most other places I have been to so far too. There was a great little place called Ramen Alley which is a tiny alley lined with noodle shops. Yum! I also (inevitably) visited the Sapporo brewery (the first brewery in Japan). Met some kiwis there and we did a bit of tasting. I also headed up the ski jump from the Sapporo Winter Olympics. It offered an amazing view of the city.
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan trixynodenIt was a very busy day on Monday. Today was one of the first days where we were able to get up and actually feel good. We're still a bit under the weather from jet lag but it is slowly fading. We had breakfast this morning at one of the many Doutour Coffee Shops spread throughout the city. It was expensive for coffee and toast but the coffee was quite good -- Randy and Kevin -- you guys would have ...
Sapporo, Japan schwinkle... in these villages. VERY Knott's Berry Farm... guess you'd call it Knott's Sushi Farm?!? There was a Fishing Village, with boat houses and a pretty lake. And also a Farming Village with Easter and Western style barns. It was all very historical and very cool. And there were small hikes in between villages where you got a real sense of the country/woods. On one such hike we found an AMAZING Building... that would be the Children's learning activity center... we went in ...
