... to make out. So we drove on hoping to catch them further down the road. A couple of miles down the road we stopped in the of Yachats and sat in the car in a very private housing estate watching the sea and sure enough, after 20 minutes or so, the whales reappeared. It was great to finally see them in their natural habitat. That seems to have completed Liz's bucket list for this holiday. So, off to Portland tomorrow and our time here is nearly ...
... this morning. Fortuna is not a lovely coastal town with little shops, etc. Northern California is very different from central/southern California I have found out. This is like blue collar, middle America, not "lifestyles of the rich and famous."
I've also officially made the transition from Highway 1 to 101 now, 1 is no longer. It's all about the 101 now, so get on board!
So the beginning of my drive is through ...
... an original resort area from the early 20th century. Quite quaint. Think we have seen al we need to see now at Newport. Toured the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse which was only used for 3 years from 1871 as it was built in a poor position. A few changes to our itinerary necessary for the next couple of days due to inclement weather. Heading south rather than east to Klamath Falls, we aren't carrying snow chains, and the weather doesn't look good there. Two days of driving to get to ...
Brian and Bill rolled out of Corvallis at about 10:30 under a lot of sunshine and a clear blue sky. The first 30 miles meandered through farmlands on the Western side of the Willamette River Valley. Numerous farm stands populated the roads. They climbed up and over the Coastal Range through thick green forests and crossed ...
... really nice to get out, let Roxie sniff around and watch the ocean waves and the colorful sunset.
We are here for three nights so will be making side trips each day. Tomorrow is Newport and Wald Port. We don't know anything about either of them so it will be a surprise for all of us :)

Great Spot, Scary Practices
It is true that this hotel is great for its location and options. But be weary of recent hotel staff. I had requested a room several months back for its view and location. After several comfirmations of its reservation, I arrived to find that they had given it away and put me in a bad location. They did finally come through with a decent accomodation. But only after going to the top and after having the blame be put all on my shoulders, before they discovered they had given it away. I also witnessed several individuals having trouble with the staff charging them for extra stays in their hotel. It hurt our vacation time because we had to spend time fighting for our original room.
Right on the beach!
We stayed at the Surftides this spring and we found it very nice. We stayed on the first floor, so the beach was right outside our patio door.
We would stay here again.
My wife and I have been going to the Surftides for over 20 years. We love it! Close to the Casino, right on the beach and the best restaurant in town right next door! Pick bottom to be on the beach or upper floors views are excellent looking out into the ocean. Swimming pool and spa, lots for a family or just a couple for a romantic weekend.
This hotel has been the greatest out of all I've stayed in! The view was magnificent, the pool and hot tub was great and the food was delicious. The staff was very helpful and generous. I definately recommend this experience to everyone. You won't regret it!

Surftides Beach Resort!! What can I say not much ,Surftides speaks for itself. We have been going to Surftides Beach Resort for many years and each visit is even better than the last. Service is "Great", staff very friendly and polite. So if you want a memorable stay at the "Coast" Give Surftides Beach Resort a call.
What a view
we have been staying here for years, our family too,the 1st floor is the way to go,it's like you're right in the ocean.GREAT BEACH ACCESS.AWESOME FOOD AT KEY WEST RESTAURANT!
Awesome family weekend getaway
Perfect for a family getaway with easy and low beach access! The view is awesome!!. So relaxing.
The perfect honeymoon getaway!
We stayed in one of the in-room jacuzzi suites on our honeymoon in 1994 and returned to the same room in summer of 2002. We loved it both times and the only changes that were made were made for the better. The staff is warm and friendly and the room was as wonderful as we remembered it to be. The facilities are kept very clean and the room service was excellent. We plan to return once a year from now on!
Great and relaxing
My family have stayed at this hotel for years. But their recent renovation makes the place even better. The location and the beach access is unbeatable on the coast. For my elderly parents or my little kids, the access is safe and short from the room. The hotel is also situated on a large piece of property so you don't feel cramped in with a bunch of parking lots or other hotels. Some of the units have kitchenettes so you can cook your own breakfast and lunch and go to the on-site restaurant for dinner. It's close to the main grocery store for added convenience. We recommend it highly!
