Historical Traveler Reviews Surfside Oceanfront Inn & Suites Virginia Beach

      To many problems

      from

My family of four (2 adults/2kids) stayed at the Surfside June 22-June 26. When we checked in they informed us that the elevator wasn't working and that our room was on the fifth floor. We had to use the elevator that took you to the ballroom then you had to walk a flight of stairs. They did fix one elevator but it was exceptionally slow and when it did get to you it was usually full of employees with large trash cans or laundry basket and you couldn't even get on. The airconditioner barely kept the room comfortable. The indoor pool was too warm. The hallways had a funny smell. When you went to use your vehicle it was cover in little styrofoam balls that the staff said was from the stuff they were spraying on the building. On a good note, the room was clean and nice and the Staff was very friendly and helpful.

The elevators were a nightmare. We were praying they would make it through the summer. Surprisingly, they survived. As soon as we could shut them down, in the off season, we replaced both elevators. They are the fasted around.

The pool is usually kept warm until the first of July when it gets real hot outside. Maybe we should rethink that policy.

The building was recieving a face lift. Therefore, the little syrofoam balls are now a thing of the past.

We would love for this guest to come back and give us another chance. Thanks.

Terrible service...and we didn't even get to stay there!

My recommendation with the Surfside Inn would be to NOT make your reservation over the internet. I made a reservation, and after giving all my billing and credit card info, received an e-mail that stated that my reservation had been successfully made. Two days later, I get another email telling me my reservation was denied. After calling the hotal two times, I received two different stories. The front desk clerk told me that once they get down to 10 rooms, they only book groups, and that they only had 8 rooms available. Later in the day I spoke with the manager, and she told me that they do not reserve the last 10 rooms, they keep them available for walk ins. If that was the case, they should not have allowed me to make the reservation! The manager tells me that I had only requested the reservation, that it was not actually confirmed. Funny that my email said that my "reservation has been made at the hotal selected"! If I had know this when I made the reservation, I would have continued my search for a different hotel.

We have recieved your reservation request and are checking rates and availability. We will get back to you via e-mail within 24 hours. Your credit card is not charged until the hotel has confirmed the reservation to you via e-mail." Once we recieved the request we denied it due to lack of rooms. She received the denied which she admits. There is a difference between a tracking number and a confirmation number. I sorry that she misunderstood.

      Really Great, coming back!

This was me and my wifes first time to Virginia Beach. We gave the Surfside Inn a shot and tried to think on the positive side of the reviews here. When we arrived at the hotel, it had looked like they were repainting the outside of the hotel. At check in time, we didn't have any problems with the staff. Our room was clean, and comfy. The balcony in the room was great to watch dolphins out at sea, and the sunrise in the morning. The restaurant in the hotel was great. The staff was nice and friendly during our stay. The price was cheap and affordable. The Surfside was near good gift shops, and restaurants. Next time we Virginia Beach, we will be sure to visit the Surfside.

      It was so enjoyable!

my vacation at the surfside inn was extremely relaxing and pleasant.the front desk employees were so much fun to be around, they went out of their way to help you find whatever it was you were looking to do and more. the room had such a pleasant atmosphere and it was refreshing with the waves crashing in the background. it was in a perfect location on the oceanfront.the restaurant had some of the best seafood ive ever tasted in all my years.this is the best vacation ive EVER had!

      The nicest staff

      from

Myself & my family stayed at the Surfside Inn on 5/28/04 for the holiday weekend. Check-in was very quick and easy, the front desk staff were the most helpful people I have ever met, every time I needed directions the would print them out and bring them to my room. The rooms were very clean. We will be staying at the Surfside Inn every year when we go to Virginia Beach.

      Smelly

      from

I found every thing to be true that was written by

reviewer #2. The suite arrangement was nice. The

place was fairly clean, but there was an oder that was very unpleaseing. You smell it as soon as you enter the lobby. This smell was through out the entire hotel. It didn't have a freshness about it at all.Luckyly we stayed out all day. It was expansive

also.Never had a no vanancy sign on.Our stay was

June 25-28,2004.Will never stay there again. There was one good thing;request were fullfilled in a timely fashsion. The people were friendly.

      Take a closer look

      from

We stayed at the Surfside hotel in Virginia Beach in September of 2003. On the outside the place looked well kept, but after staying only one night, we learned otherwise. The oceanview room had a dirty balcony. Empy beer bottle and sticky floor. The air conditioner had no cover on the pipes. We did not have small children with us, but if you did, they could stick their hand down in it to the dirty water collection area. The cable TV was in and out and then stayed completely out all night (Monday night football night!!). The elevator was dirty and even got stuck in the morning with someone in it and the fire department was called in. The indoor pool was supposed to be heated. It was not and ice cold. The worst part was telling the management in the morning and they said "you should have told us earlier so we could do something about it". I told them i could not even get extra towels when i called for them how are you going to take out a floor air conditioner in the middle of the night?!!! I am not one to complain and usually just grin and bare it, but I felt I deserved at least a 25% discount (not even mentioning money back) for all the inconveniences, which they would not do. They just said the managerwasn't in and he would call me. He never did. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The Comfort Inn down the street was much better.

Surfside OceanFront Inn Not worth a cent!

      from

I was called to be interviewed in Virginia Beach and decided not to reserve a room until I arrived. It was November so plenty of rooms would be available! I saw a special $49.00 a night on their sign and decided to give it a try! Just entering the elevator I realized the mistake I made the elevator was dirty, severly scratched and dinged and the smell from a cooking establishment filled the air the smell was like grease from cooking wings! I arrived on my floor and looked down the hallway again it got worse the hallway was dirty, dingy the carpet stained and that smell was still there not as strong as the elevator though. I entered my room things were neat and tidy however the room was smaller then most I've been! Even though it was November I decided to sleep with the balcony door open because I could faintly smell that grease. If you're on a budget or pinching pennies find another place since I was alone and not staying for a long period of time! I went the cheap route! Never Again! Plus I needed to wash all my clothes the following day from that smell clinging!Good luck if you decide to stay!

Made it down the bay overnight

Survived a wild ride down the bay. Some of the roughest conditions we have experienced on the Chesapeake. Big waves. 30+ kt winds and lots of driving rain. Enjoyed our new cockpit enclosures as well as the heater we installed below. The AIS system which allowed us to identify ships during the night was a big help.

Navy ships don't use AIS so we slowed to enter Hampton Roads after sunrise. Still, with heavy ...

      Disappointing Virginia Beach!

      ... the next day!

We took a walk along part of the 3 mile boardwalk in Virginia Beach - what a disappointment! I read somewhere it's been named one of Top 10 Boardwalks so we were looking forward to it. It's nothing more than a bare, wide, concrete, ( yes concrete, not a board insight) highway with 1970's style boring hotels fronting it. No planters or flowers, some grass & plants but absolutely no ...

... br> We accomplished our non-stop passage plan, arriving at Willoughby Bay, Norfolk, VA on May 19 at 1205, and dropping anchor just outside Willoughby Harbor Marina. Distance of the passage was 660nm over 4 days, 4 hours, 15 minutes for an average speed of 6.6 kts. Pretty typical for our offshore passages.

Arriving in Norfolk, our plan had been to take Jim ashore in the dinghy to his ...

The great thing about VIrginia Beach was the public transportation. for 2 dollars you could ride the buses all day until 2 a.m. the next morning. si instead of driving downtown and attempting to find a parking space, we got on the bus. Walked the board walk and it was hot. Found a little place to have a burger and a beer and then walked so more. we ...

... Then we met Tiffany's parent's at the Cheesecake factory for dinner. This was very nice and delicious. We have lots left to enjoy later tonight and tomorrow before we head out.

Now, we are just chillin' for the evening and we plan to shop a bit tomorrow then head back to Richmond to visit some parks. Then we have decided to dedicate Friday to Ikea. I can't buy anything because I have no where to put it. But I can always remember that I can order it online and they ...
