A very pretty (cobbled alleyways, olde worlde stylee, cows in a field with not only udders, but also tuneful bells which, when youºve got a dozen, made quite a din a la Mike Oldfield) little town, unlike the campsite which was essentially a sodden piece of grass, for which we were charged Euro 22, for the pleasure of a night's shut-eye.
Leaving San Sebastian behind we drove to Santander to spend the night. With nothing more then the car, no place to stay and no plan. As luck turns out we found a cheap Pension to stay at, and ate in their quaint little restaurant, treated to warm hospitality, good food, and free Grappa and Lemonchelo
Santander, Cantabria, Spain and Canary Islands sofenjon... rain. Change of plans again - I would do a day trip after all, since the beach would not be a fun option today.
I hopped a bus to the centre, realizing that I should have bought a 10 pack of tickets when I got here, saving some money in the process. But upon arrival, I didn't realize how much busing would be done, and that I'd be here a third day.
There were no buses for Santillana del Mar or Comillas (both lie on the same ...
I didn't bother setting my alarm today, but I was still up at 8! Why??? Why is it so difficult to sleep in??? No matter, off for a walk around this beautiful town. Surprisingly, there were a number of early risers already out on the beach - it's Spain, nobody is supposed to get up this early, only Canadian tourists who have trouble sleeping in!
I stayed close by in El Sardinero for breakfast, at the cafe adjoining Heladeria Italiana ...
... I prefer Leon's because of its stained glass windows. Gothic cathedrals are normally dark on the inside, but the Burgos cathedral seemed almost too bright. There were, however, some very interesting items to be found in the cathedral. And as is generally true, the cloisters were the best part of the cathedral, at least for me. Though today, this was mostly due to the high number of senoritas walking about the cloisters.
Having time to kill ...
... women with slightly less in the
pneumatic chest department. This really is the 21st
Century you know! At least I think that by employing the marketeers
from Brittany Ferries they would maybe have called the festival
Tractores y Chocolate y Tetas or some such giving some clue to the
actual content, I mean anyone hoping for a bar of chocolate or a ride
on a tractor would be sadly disappointed.
Anyhow, things ridiculous aren't
confined to ...
... hard going.
Managed to cycle around about 50km today which i was pretty happy with after the late start, tomorrow will be longer for sure. I made camp this evening in a prettty seaside town called Laredo and no sooner than i had pitched my tent the heavens opened and dropped rain, thunder and lightning aplenty upon all below. Heaven and hell in a day, day one to be precise.
Not going to Germany like I have purchased tickets for. I would have had to leave at 12:30, and there is no way I could have put myself through that. Im whiped. Plus there is no place for me to stay, and the girls I would go with have differnt places to go and no plans of anything to do/see. Not to mention the 100 euro train ticket! No thank you! Chilling with my friends tomorrow. We will eat pizza and watch Ditry dancing. Relaxing is nice!
Santander, Cantabria, Spain and Canary Islands jschae13... ve found stores and businesses closed even when the sign on the front door shows that they should be open. With a little exploring, we find somebody who agrees to help us ... she gives us the key to the library and after about ten minutes of messing with the systems we get connected. Perfecto! Samuel's wildest dreams become fulfilled .... he gets to play ToonTown Online while I work. Janice hops on MySpace and her email. And Ella cruises Nick Jr ...
Orena, Spain and Canary Islands styrsky... that and kicked us out. Finally we met a group of backpackers in the same position as us and decided to try and find something together. We were told that there was a spot that we could camp out but that was halfway up a mountain and we were all a little too tired for that. So what we ended up doing was creating a small backpacker camp in a caged in basketball court right on the beach. I ...
