    ... balcony looks like something out of a painting. It would be like if the hiking area near North Bend/Mt. Si had a resort town nestled in among its valleys, but with higher elevation.     Every region of Japan is known for a specific craft. The Hankone area is well known for mosaic woodworking called Hakone Yosegi Zaiku. We visit a small store with a workshop on the 2nd floor and meet the owner and 7th generation master craftsman. He shows us how his products are made and it’s just amazing.     ... grounds is prohibited, but the East gardens of the Imperial complex is open to the public, so we made the most of this. The gardens are picturesque in all the ways you`d expect of a Japanese garden: calm, with a small waterfall flowing into a pool of brightly coloured carp. All this with Tokyo`s impressive urban centre towering in the background, you get a real sense of Japan present and past wandering in the gardens.
